I’ve also discovered the figurative meaning. Discrepancies exist between AH (an object, place, or area that reflects its heritage) and M-W (something having usually diverse layers or aspects apparent beneath the surface). The M-W retains the physical imagery of layers whereas the AH defines the word more generally.
