Jim Thompson (1906-1977) 18 months ago

He wrote a lot of thrillers which either depict or are a manifestation of a disordered mind. I’ve read several of them, and it’s amazing such strange stuff was published in more conservative times.

“After Dark, My Sweet” (1955) I’ve read it, but don’t remember it well.
    “The Alcoholics” (1953)
    “Bad Boy” (1953)
“Child of Rage” (1972) I may or may not have read it.
    “The Criminal” (1953)
    “Cropper’s Cabin” (1952)
“The Getaway” (1959) This is for the most part unlike the movies. Steve McQueen wanted a more upbeat ending.
    “The Golden Gizmo” (1954)
    “The Golden Sinner” (1955)
“The Grifters” (1963) I think the movie is relatively similar.
    “Heed the Thunder” (1946)
“A Hell of a Woman” (1954) Hell, indeed.
“Ironside” (1967) A licensed spinoff of the TV show. I haven’t read it.
    “The Kill-Off” (1957)
“The Killer Inside Me” (1952) This is one of the best I’ve read.
    “King Blood” (1973)
“Nothing But a Man” (1970) This is a licensed spinoff of a film.
    “The Nothing Man” (1954)
    “Nothing More Than Murder” (1949)
“Now and On Earth” (1942) I remember nothing but that I read it.
“Pop. 1280” (1964) A film was made as “Coup de Torchon.” Both are quite good.
    “Recoil” (1953)
    “The Rip-Off” (1989)
    “Roughneck” (1954)
    “Savage Night” (1953)
    “South of Heaven” (1967)
“A Swell-Looking Babe” (1954) This is weird – even from Jim Thompson.
    “Texas by the Tail” (1965)
    “The Transgressors” (1961)
“The Undefeated” (1969) A licensed spinoff of a film
    “Wild Town” (1957)

There are some short stories, but “This World, Then the Fireworks” is the only one I recall.
