I am very excited about converting a diesel car to run on used vegetable oil. I have a very talented neighbor who is willing to do this for me for very little money; however, I cannot find a used diesel Golf anywhere. I want a Volkswagen manufactured before direct fuel injection became a feature in the early 1990s. If anyone has a lead on a car like this, please let me know. I’ve been saving money for a new car, and I really thought that I would go green and buy a hybrid. Then I realized that I would still be dependent on fossil fuels and that it’s not really helping to buy a hybrid, because I still need gas. What better way to go green than to buy a bio-diesel car? Can’t wait to find the perfect car abd really make a difference!

Got an SVO vehicle!!!

And I need to educate myself on what is involved in a carbon footprint. Sites on carbon footprints and low environmental impact say that SVO and plant sourced biofuels (as long as they’re not from deforested rain forests) is zero. but wouldn’t there be a footprint from the CO2 emissions? I’m confused. Still, it seems that SVO might be a good way to go to reduce my carbon footprint.

Next, becoming vegetarian…. I just recently read a review of a book and it said you can reduce your carbon footprint by 25% by not eating meat…. I guess I already knew that, just not the actual percentages.

I saw a lot of cars for sell that were in mid-conversion… so maybe it’s not so simple to do. It would cost about an extra $1k on top of the kit (another $1k) to get somebody else to do it.

Am still learning about it. I don’t even know if we have enough room in our apartment to do all the processing, filtering of the oil. (Maybe on our balcony?) Don’t think there are any places here that will do it for you. This is a groovy college town, but not that groovy, I guess.

I want to learn more about how much of a carbon footprint it has… I start thinking in circles….

Mu husband Mercury Man got a new (ok gently used) car and our daughter I-bop’s car is shot (she got a car from the parents of one of her friends for free, but the engine cradle is about to fall out) so we’re going to trade it in for parts and get her a used car so she can get back and forth to college and work. I wanted to keep it and then make this the car we convert, but the cost of a new cradle and install is prohibitive. Which leaves my car, still stuck in impound (you don’t even want to hear about that, long story). It’s an old car and got a few things wrong with it, nothing major, but busted enough I won’t mind getting in there or be scared I’m going to damage it irreparably. I found instructions! and I’m going to get started next week when I get my car out. Seems pretty straight-forward:

I’ve got to let go of this goal. This year has been pretty shitty finacially and I cant see anyway to invest 17k in this project… I dont want to take on any more loans right now until our credit card balance is 0. Its only off the list until we can get ourselves back on track.

I just don’t have the means (or money) to do this right now. Perhaps in a few years?
