Looking for a meetup group to do the railway party. Found a group that does a train day trip out of Union Sta. to Santa Barbara. Joined the group and may sign up for the Nov. 7 trip. 3 years ago

How I did it: It started with the idea, and sending our invitations. It seemed like it would be natural and easy and fun, hopping on and off the train, meeting each other as we went along.
But did you know it could look like this?
This museum of Rock n roll is pretty much dedicated to Jimi Hendrix and this is the Space Needle reflected in the museum exterior.
We got to be a rock n band and perform, get taped and watch and hear ourselves, but Hendrix was overdubbed on us. We sounded amazing!!!! 4 years ago
We ferried to Tillicum, where Mount Rainier seemed to float over the Sound. 4 years ago
It was packed with people and food and other goodies.
This is inside the original Starbucks. I liked the odd light reflecting overhead. 4 years ago
This probably needs some tweaking. Make it big – there are two lovers in a passionate embrace on the left. 4 years ago
through the window.
Since the train goes by us at home, the tags on the cars come to be intriguing. This is not our usual view of them. 4 years ago
The porter opened the little window.
Here is our train entering a tunnel in Oregon. 4 years ago
It would have been great way to meet some fellow 43Ter’s! 4 years ago
I walked in late-ish (so me) and thought the group was bigger than it was. It was Mahinui and her hubby R, all alone. I convinced my hubby to come along, too, so the four of us had a great time, and talked and talked.
We waited for the train with them, since it was late.
But as they were boarding, we said our goodbyes, and I wondered who else was on the train.
I regret I couldn’t go even for the short ride, and then back, but it was fun meeting Mahinui and her hubby.
We need to do a big meet up again, you guys.
Like more than two people from 43 showing up.
It was great, and I look forward to seeing Mahinui and hubby again some time :) 4 years ago
I’m afraid the train got in to Seattle too late for us to make it to the meetup. I wish I could have met Mahinui and any others. Hopefully there will be another opportunity like this one. Thanks for organizing, Mahinui! 4 years ago
Before the ride we shared some drinks and Kobe burgers with Girl in the Curl and her man, which was such a good time. Hope Ti is feeling better, and although it was fun running into Catattack and Adar on the platform it probably would have been more fun if they’d gotten off in Martinez.
In the meetup mode, we met people from all over the place on the journey. And there are lots of photos yet to be down loaded, which I will come back and put up here.
No Wifi on the Coast Starlight, alas. Although that made for a lot of great time with my honey.
At the last leg of the trip, lying on the bunk and watching the Sound reflecting lights with no moon was magical.
Now we are in Seattle, and about to get out and about!
Maybe we can do this again. It is a great trip. 4 years ago
And we [Catattack and I] met Mahinui… briefly!... on the platform at Emeryville. We got on at Van Nuys and had a great day on the train, scoping out the sights and explaining my “43Things” nametag to assorted Amtrak employees and fellow travelers.
If there was another 43T person between Van Nuys and Emeryville, we missed you, and I’m sorry about that. On the other hand, it was a lovely Saturday! 4 years ago
I have this to say.
If the expiration date on the yogurt has passed, don’t test it. I tested it. I lost. Oh lord, how I lost! You know it’s bad when the cold sweats hit in the middle of the shower that’s supposed to make you feel better.
If I’m not stuck in the bathroom or passed out in bed, I’ll join in virtually. I just talked to mahinui and she was so sweet. She has a real name, too. Go figure, right? I was stumped about who to ask for when her husband answered.
$25 down the toilet, along with everything I’ve eaten from breast milk on. 4 years ago
It’s actually happening! I’ll only be on the train from Emeryville to Martinez, but I’ll be at the meetup before and I can’t wait! 4 years ago
and tonight’s the night.
Emerygrill in Emeryville. There’s a walkway from the train station across the tracks, and on the other side is the Emerygrill.
Then, some of get off the train, some get on, and the journey continues up the coast.
We 43Ters will meet up in the first lounge car after the front of the train. I’ll make some discreet sign and figure out a way to display it. It will be the number 43.
See you along the coast route! Coast Starlight! Leaves this morning from way down south, goes way on up north! wooooah wooooo woooo! clang clang! The trains have been woooooah woooing and clang clanging this morning in celebration as they streak past! 4 years ago
mahinui and mr mah have tickets!
We are catching the train in Emeryville, with the meetup before.
If you are coming to the Emeryville meetup, please send me a message so I will know what to have in the way of food for us.
We’re going all the way to Seattle – woo hoo!
There are good flights available on Southwest right now for returns.
Who else is coming along? 4 years ago
Our reservations are all in place, we’re going to use a couple of my FF coupons to fly down to Burbank, and catch the Coast Starlight at the Van Nuys station. Then we ride as far as Emeryville.
This is so COOL!!!!!!!!
We do need to figure out how to find the 43Thingsters, though, once we are on the train. Anyone have ideas about how to do that? 4 years ago
A suggestion for where we could meet in Seattle:
This gallery/lounge is open Sunday night until 2 am. It also happens to be intimately connected to 43 Things. A family connection as it were.
What do you think? 4 years ago
I’ll look into the logistics soon to see if I can manage it. Thanks Mahinui! 4 years ago
At the very least, I will be a virtual participant, and perhaps I can work my schedule around to allow me to join in 3D! 4 years ago
The scheduling might be difficult for me but if I can make it I would love to join virtually and possibly even in person in Seattle. 4 years ago
There are those among us who simply live too far away to hop the train. But don’t let that keep you away!
You can join the goal and be a virtual part of the party.
Here’s the way it will work: We begin Saturday August 30 about 8 am California time. That will be in San Diego. People will be coming aboard along the route – Van Nuys, San Luis Obispo, San Jose, Emeryville, Kelso, Etc…
The train has wifi. We have lap tops. So….
The party will stretch along through the wee hours, Pacific Daily Savings Time, as those of us in the Bay Area in Cali don’t get on until late Saturday night.
We can post pictures and so on as we travel…
So come along on, even if you’re in Africa or Oslo… Don’t be shy! 4 years ago
