How to be published
It made me
feel productive.
 "It is not so much to publish, as it is what and where you publish."
How I did it: More than the process of publishing--which was through a colleague that invited me to submit an article for a book she was writing--what really matters is what you publish, which leads to the question where to publish. Anybody can publish anything through Kinko's, self-publishing, or small homemade presses. The question is--what do you want to be published? Which leads to the question-where do you want to publish? In my case, I wanted to have an article in a peer-reviewed, scientific journal. In order to do that, however, I need to write an article either on a scientific finding, literature review, or exploratory research in a subject I really knew. More than the act of publishing though, what represented most of my four years was reading literature on that subject and gaining experiences to be able to present exploratory work, as well as to get into the academic circles that made my participation in a publication possible.
Lessons & tips: The key things is to read as much as you can about the sort of thing you want to publish. Whether it be an article, a novel, or an op-ed, I think that what most helps is reading as many of these things as you can, in the publication you would like to see your ideas in print. Once you know what you want to write, learn about the press, publication, venue, market, and see what is out there, both to learn what others have said on a subject or to see "how it is done." |

ok, so im 15, my only career thought has just gone down the loo, and what do i have left floating in this blonde head of mine? an apparent talent for writing, stubbornness, and an idea that wont go away.

At the very young age of 16 I was published a total number of 7 times in my counties newspaper. All I had to do was walk in there with my resume my camera, and examples of my work. you just need to get motivated, you can do it!!

In fifth grade, I wrote a poem about nature and it was published in an annual poetry book for young children.
My fifth grade teacher even bought the stamp so that I could send it in.
I can’t remember most of it, and I think my mom has both copies of the book that was sent to us.
I think it went something like…
nature is a wonderful thing
like birds, it lets them have wings
(some other things, a couple verses)
isn’t nature a wonderful thing?

I can’t believe it’s been nearly half a year since I published. It seems like forever and yet I remember it so clearly. The thing I got published was a short story named Faldet (The Fall in English) in Politiken (one of the biggest Danish newspapers). It was so surreal to see your name, face and your story in the sunday edition of the paper. I recommend anyone to keep trying—it makes all the rejections worth it when it finally happens.
Next goal: Get a traditional publisher to publish a book-length piece of fiction written by me :)

Wow! It all finally came to pass. I got the book about 5 weeks ago and it looks awesome and I’m am excited to get it into teenager’s hands..It is up at amazon.com – borders.com and target.com and in our local bookstore soon. God really helped me get this goal accomplished. Hopefully teens will be challenged, encouraged and built up by it.
