How I did it: I saw an advert calling for essays for a new book. I sent an email off to the editor but he told me they had enough submissions. Normally I think at that point I'd give up, but I then replied and said, "Oh, what a pity, I was going to write about these super-interesting things..."

And then he replied and said, "Can you get it to me in a week?"

So the lesson is to be persistent. Though I kind of need to take my own advice on that! ;-)
