Hail To the Victor(ia Hale!) 5 months ago

When I interned at Glamour magazine in the fall of 2007, I had the rare opportunity to attend Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards; my two heroes were receiving awards that year. Lara Logan, CNN and 60 Minutes foreign correspondent and Victoria Hale, founder and CEO of OneWorld Health, a company that uses retired pharmaceutical drugs and reformulates them for new uses while making them affordable for people living in third world countries. She gave up a high paying job in the mainstream pharmaceutical world to risk everything to help those less fortunate. At the Awards, she addresses a group of female inner city students that had been invited to the event by the magazine by saying, “You know you’ll live to be 100, don’t you? What are you going to do with that time?” Well, Victoria, you might have been speaking directly to those high school girls, but I heard you and I’m working on making you proud.

If I had a wish 10 months ago

If I could meet anyone today, it would be the mythical mother I always wished I had. Someone who would know just the right balance between pampering me when I feel lousy, and pushing me to excel. Someone that I could trust would always love me NO MATTER WHAT. Someone who set a good example for me that I could follow.

Someone who would always tell me “It’s not you—it’s him.”
Someone who would fix me up with the very nice son of her friend, because he’s ten times better than “that last one”.
Someone who wouldn’t let me leave the house “wearing that”.
Someone who would bring me a cup of tea. Or bring me to the doctor if I needed it.
Someone who had a good marriage herself, to a man who honored her.
Someone who could teach me how to do it.

Queen Latifah 10 months ago

I love her so much! She has a beautiful aura about her, which I defy anyone to deny. I wonder where she got her strength?

She and Julie Andrews. Two ladies that really do look like queens. :) (Or at least how I wish queens were!)

Two heroes I've already met: 12 months ago

Three years ago, I met my hero Terry Pratchett. He was at a book signing, and I was privileged to hear him speak and get his autograph. This man is a GOD to me, and I believe he actually gave me almost a shy, flirtatious smile.

One and a half years ago, I met my hero Eddie Izzard. He was doing a show locally, and I was able to not only get a ticket, but also find the darn place (across the water, where I never drive) and get his autograph as well. He was SO SWEET he even let me hug him!

Both of these encounters were unbelieveably moving to me, and left me floating on air for at least a week afterwards. They both will forever be remembered as high points of my life.

Masanobu Fukuoka 12 months ago

Author of “The One-Straw Revolution”, organic gardening pioneer, Japanese rice farmer, and still alive, though pushing 100.

His work inspires me, and could potentially change the world for the better by balancing the climate and feeding all the hungry.
