i want to volunteer anywhere,
whether its reading to the blind or spending time with cancer patients, im on my summer vacation and want to do something fulilling and memorable.
How to volunteer somewhere
How I did it: well as part of uni we have to go on placement.
i volunteer at a community centre 4 days a week 9-5
i searched the net for a community centre focusing in community development. found this one, rang/emailed community development officer, got a meeting, went and looked around centre and chatted about volunteering/having placement here. decided to take it up, organised a starting time, and here i am!
:)
Lessons & tips: research!
find somewhere you want to work, where you will be happy and want to spend your time volunteering.
visit the centre/org before you accept volunteering role- its better to get a feel for where your possibly gonna work.
just make sure your happy
Resources:
- internet
- car- to visit centre
- email/phone-ring to org a time to see the centre/org before you take on volunteering role

I had my interview and now I’m just waiting for the clearances to go thru. Then I should be matched with a Little, so probably witin the next 45 – 60 days I should be a big sister.
suitebliss : Life is so complicated at times.
I have an interview next week to become a Big Sister. I’m looking forward to it. I was worried about doing this because I’m so selfish with my time, but it wouldn’t hurt to try to make a difference in someone else’s life a couple of days out of the month.
Originally I was going to do the Green Hope for Women’s service. I thought it would be rewarding but after several attempts to follow up with the lady in charge and no responce I decided to see what Catholic Big Brothers & Big Sisters was all about as they were my other choice. Upon going to the first interview I instantly realized this would be a better experience. Seemed more organized and something that woudl be more streamline. I have already been accepted into the program and I have my first training session in a few weeks! I am not saying that this is done yet though, because I want it to say as a reminder until I actually am placed with a little sister!
I used to volunteer for different groups and organizations when I was in highschool and actually miss it. I’m excited about volunteering with the Humane Society or maybe reading to little kids at the library.
I think sometimes the hardest thing for me when I have goals on my plate is to understand patience. I haven’t heard back from them yet, but am praying I do. I think it will be a great organization to work with!
The first step in actually volunteering is to find somewhere that works for you. Over Christmas I found an organization that helps children whose parents are in jail – and for some reason this spoke the loudest to me.
I went to the meet and greet tonight and think if I get accepted it is something I will go through with and hopefully by the grace of God I am placed with the right person and it helps me too.
i’m helping a little six year old with his reading and writing. it’s soo rewarding to see his improvement and his eagerness to learn more. i would recommend it to anyone looking for a teaching experience!!!
