The only thing left is mowing the lawn and spreading fall fertilizer, but I’m hoping my husband will do that. Otherwise, I’m basically done with my fall garden clean-up.

    Halfway through 13 months ago

I took down the corn and bundled the stalks. I took down the tomatoes, and put the fruit in the kitchen, the plants into yard waste, and the stakes by the side of the house. I put the winter squash by the front door, and the summer squash in the fridge, and the plants into yard waste. The basil is in the kitchen. A few potatoes came up, were washed, and they’re in the fridge – the rest remain in the ground for harvest during the winter.

And then there were the carrots. I’ve been pulling carrots from time to time from the garden, but most of them have been in the ground. I’ve had a vague notion that there were a lot of carrots out there. Well, I pulled up every carrot today, and OMG, there were a lot of carrots.

I also raked some maple leaves.

Ready now for phase 2 of today: spreading the compost, and if I have time, planting the crocuses.

    Sunday 13 months ago

It took me all day Sunday to divide the irises and then take out some things that were brown, and do weeding. I bought mulch to go down on the flower bed, but didn’t have time to spread it.

You’d think with all the bicycling I do I wouldn’t be sore afterwards, but I was.

    Tasks:
Divide the irises (already too late?)
    Plant the crocuses
Take down the corn stalks for the sukkah
    Dig up the potatoes
Take down the basil and the tomatoes
Plant some azaleas? (They’re on clearance!)
Run the weed whacker along the stone wall
    Rake leaves
Sift compost and work into the garden

When I purchased this house, there was a little garden in the backyard that had fallen into disarray. It needs some serious weeding digging up. I really have no idea how to garden, and no idea what I would grow if I did. But I really want to turn that back spot into something useful. Today, I weeded it about 50%, but I know they’ll be back with a vengeance in a week.

never done, really 17 months ago

but done for now. a bunch of different tomatoes are in and blooming, some peppers are in. arugula is out of control as usual. cilantro seems to be coming up in a promising way. sunflowers are sturdy and starting to develop big fat heads. and now i’ve left town for a couple of weeks and the whole thing in the hands of T. have to remember to let him know that if anything dies, not to sweat it – it will grow again!

include a new shiso, peppers and two varieties of tomato.

and I fertilized so now, if I just pay attention, good things should be happening soon.
