Elusive Sleuth life is awesome :)
I’ve been meaning to get an external hard drive ever since I brought my laptop back in January. I finally got around to it before I came home from visiting my sister at university on the weekend. I brought Western Digital 250GB hard drive. I think it would be ultimately geeky to have a 1TB hard drive, but I found out they need to run from their own power source which put me off them…
The motivating factor for me was that i’ve been having trouble with some driver software. I asked the shop where I brought my laptop from, a few questions about the problem, and they suggested I do a System Recovery, as opposed to System Restore. (I used System Restore the first time my DVD driver software wouldn’t load, but it hasn’t worked this time.) I thought about it, but it seems a little OTT, like using a plaster cast to fix a small cut on a finger. Seriously, why should I need to do a complete user and system backup, and do a full system recovery, just to fix driver software that won’t load? The guy I spoke to didn’t really know what he was on about, but I couldn’t speak to the guy I brought my laptop from because he’d just stopped working at that company.
Now that i’ve got my external hard drive i’m going to back up my files, and then try and re-install the drivers. If that doesn’t work, i’m going to ask to have it sent back to the Acer service centre, and repaired under warranty as opposed to doing a System Recovery.
Finally did it. We bought one (Iomega 160GB Portable Hard Drive). We’ve been meaning to buy one for the longest of time but never did. One of my uncles had bought one though and my parents I suppose got jealous (lol) and so finally got the okay to buy it.
Cost about $90. Could have bought a 500GB one but I figured I’m okay if it lasts for a year. $90 is okay. I don’t like investing too heavily on things that we may need, right now 160GB is just fine. Maybe later on we’ll upgrade and by that time, storage will be even cheaper!

I went and bought a new external disc drive this afternoon. I have now set it up and am able to watch my discs again 02/01/09.

I need one of these as the disc drive on my computer is no longer reading discs for some reason 25/01/09).
I need to get one of these because my last PC went down and I lost everything in the process of figuring out what was wrong. Don’t want that to happen again.
I want a really big one. Like 500GB+.
700 gigs..because my ipod is 80 and my computer is only 60 and I no longer believe in non-digitized movies and music (because CD cases have been stolen too many times)
Space is cheap these days, comparatively, and very worthwhile… especially in case of computer failure. Don’t lose your stuff! Get an external!
160GB. thats fairly grand like. but i cn’t get anything on it. how the hell do you work this thing in a mac?? god…

I desperately need one for my iMac. I want to store all my MP3 files onto an external hard drive lest Itunes malfunctions and erases my entire music collection again.

I bought a 250GB drive today to back up my (still unfixed) laptop, in case I have to wipe it clean to get it working again. It’s good to have even if I don’t have to wipe the drive today.
