learn to play jazz

That would be cool. I have some inspiration, if only I could get it right…

Jazz Ensemble, researching, improv. I can learn jazz.

I’m sitting on the couch in my living room with my best friend, listening to Dave Douglas play jazz trumpet. This time last winter, I thought I’d be going to college at the Berklee College of Music for my freshman year of musical education. That never happened. I’d be playing with some of the world’s most innovative young jazz musicians in the world. In a week, I go back to University of Montana to finish my second semester as a piano performance and music composition and technology major. When I get there, I’m starting a jazz combo. No two ways about it.

I’ve tried to do this many times over the years, and I never sound convincing. I should have focused on it instead of classical guitar. I need some functional jazz chops to work on a cruise ship, which I may try and do.

i was walking from quincy market to government station in boston and there was a guitar player and saxophone player near the station. it inspired me to learn more about jazz. i’ve listened to a lot of jazz but in most songs the guitar is pretty low, i had never heard it so up front like i did on the street. so far, i bought a book, i’m working my way through it then i’ll look into lessons from someone who specializes in the genre.
