Watch the Golden Compass in the cinema

i went searching online for theatres showing the
G.C. Nothing doing…

ah… i guess i’ll have to search for lil out of the way theatres that are not listed online.

... but then my friend’s 9-year old daughter made a perceptive remark that made me rethink whether i should see it yet.

She said that maybe i should read the book before watching the movie because the book is better than the film. I said in response that that was precisely why i wanted to see the film first, so that it wouldn’t disappoint me. But then she said (and here’s the perceptive part) that she’d still recommend reading the book first, because if i watch the movie first then it’ll take away the fun of imagining the characters and the world of the golden compass in my mind, in my own way… She gave the example of Harry Potter… that, before she saw any of the films, she had her own harry potter world in her head, but then, after she saw a couple of films, every time she read a new book, she couldn’t dislodge the ready-made film set of harry potter from her mind… her own imagining of it was lost. but, at least she had her own imagining of it for a while…

actually, i’m struggling here to remember her actual words… they were a lot more persuasive and beautiful… my paraphrase is but a pale rememberance of her animated explanation, complete with arresting choice of words, starry eyes and expansive hand gestures

the only downside is that i’ll be going alone… ah, that’s alright, right?

i need to plan a time to go see this now!

This was very entertaining and Lyra is a really funny sparkly character. A good 2h and 8.5 soles spent! Yeah the cinema price rose from 8 to 8.5 soles (still only 2.2 euros).

Going Tuesday at 8.20pm.
Going to the movies in Peru is so cheap. This one cinema we go to is a bit posh but on Tuesdays it’s only 8 soles – 2.5 US$ to watch a film, any film. Cool, huh?
