I rode my road bike from Santa Cruz to Santa Monica with 3 people I’d never met before. We carried all of our stuff for 9 days on our bikes. This was one of the most difficult things I’d ever done. The hills of Big Sur were beautiful but really really uphill!
If I were to do this again, I’d only consider if I went with people I knew (or were at least motivating and social), or stayed in hotels along the way (less to carry), or had a van following me to carry my stuff.
Do make sure to get a dorky yellow vest to wear. The road is very windy. Get “Mr.Tuffy’s” in your tires to prevent flats. Drink lots of water and enjoy the scenery. My favorite part was meeting people along the way. My favorite place to stay was Pfieffer Big Sur Campground.
