So it’s only 7:30 pm on Christmas day, but still. I survived! Now, onto next year…

Finish my Christmas shopping! 23 months ago
I still have to do all my shopping for my husband’s stuff:
  • The Simpsons Movie DVD
  • A tin of Danish Butter Cookies (his favorites)
  • A back scratcher, since his back always itches
  • A pair of winter boots
  • An album for the postcards he collects
  • Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? board game
  • A 110-pc tool set
  • An iTunes gift card

I know that sounds like a ton of stuff, but it’s all on sale so I’m spending less than $100 total. Pretty good, I think. He deserves a good holiday for once in his life; his parents are both lazy slobs, so he’s never opened gifts on Christmas morning.

And then his family is coming over for a Christmas Eve lunch thing from 1:00-4:00 or so. I got nominated and no one has offered to bring any food. So I’m just doing a bare minumum of snacks. Screw them. They ALWAYS do this to us! Every year! I know this is the season for good will and shit, but his family takes advantage of us big time…
  • A veggie tray: carrots, celery, and dip
  • A meat platter: summer sausage, cheese, and crackers
  • Bacon-wrapped beanie weenies (baked in brown sugar and skewered with toothpicks)

So that’s it. I also need to do one thing to finish off everyone’s gift buckets. This year we did one bucket for each family, and in it are holiday oven mitts, a holiday dish towel, a vanilla candle, snowman salt and pepper shakers, a unique ornament for each family, gingerbread man shower gel, and a shower pouf. To finish them off I am going to use those clear plastic pastry bags (for cake decorating) and fill them with hot cocoa powder, then top each bag off with mini marshmallows, and tie shut with a ribbon. Cute, huh?

Every year I try to keep the holidays as commercial-free as possible. But every year I give in and go for gifts. However, I do make sure to only give homemade-ish gifts to friends and family. Last year I gave quilts I made. Next year I’m going to give all homemade baked goodies.

working on it! 23 months ago

Yesterday we sent off our Christmas cards. My biggest problem now is planning this year’s get together with his family. I have to cook something, probably not a formal meal or anything. Maybe just my taco dip (which they all love), and a veggie tray, then a meat and cheese tray, and some Little Smokies too. I need some more easy things to cook, but I’ll figure that all out eventually. Oh, and figure out a day that works for everyone.

Damn it! This is too much work for a hermit like me!
