How I did it: I did this a few years ago. Envirosports' Sharkfest swim had filled up but they had spots in their triathalon to do just the swim portion so this is what I did since I certainly wasn't prepared to bike and run. I was taking finals in grad school in UT at the time I heard about it so I really didn't train too much, but I've swum my whole life and done many ocean competitions. The water was very rough that day with extremely strong currents so I would recommend that people doing this do train in open water first. It was also really cold. Because this was a last minute thing I decided to do, I did not rent (or buy) a wetsuit in advance. I went to many rental shops before I finally found one available. It wasn't quite the right size and really cut up my neck (which really didn't look good). Even with a cut up neck, it was definitely worth it. Read how I did it… 4 years ago

My boy and I did it through Envirosports.com and their program is so awesome, crazy, hectic, manic, and loving the way only San Francisco can be. I finished in 50 minutes and yes, I did get swept out to see, and the boat had to retrieve me and put me back in the race… but that’s fun of escaping the rock! 6 years ago

I’ve been mulling this over since reading a discription of it in Michael Bane’s book.
Here’s what it comes down to – I don’t think I actually want to be that cold. I don’t do well being cold – in fact, I’m a wimp.
So I think I’ll pick some other goal to work towards. 6 years ago

I decided to do a couple of big athletic things this summer to celebrate my tenth year out from a diagnosis of breast cancer at age 36. The first is a marathon, which I’m running in San Francisco on July 31. The second is the Alcatraz swim. I’m not worried at all about the marathon! I’ve already done a 23-mile run, and it went very well. In fact, the next day I snowshoed 3 miles.
But this swim… I’m sure I can do it, but I worry about getting cold (even though I’m wearing a wetsuit) and getting carried out to sea under the Golden Gate Bridge (even though there are good instructions on how how to avoid that, and safety boaters around if you need help). I’m a strong swimmer, but still, it’s a little daunting being way out there where you can’t touch the bottom… It’s definitely a challenge.
But I’m up for it! And a work colleague is doing it as well—only she’s not wearing a wetsuit! Crazy woman! 7 years ago
