Best friend dared me to skydive in college. And who was I to turn down a dare …. there was no jump door on the plane so the door was always removed for the jumps. There’s nothing like sitting in the open door and rolling off down the runway. One day the brakes weren’t set on the wheel when I stepped out. I went out upsidedown and backwards. My chute came up thru my legs and opened making me do a jackknife upside down and both contact lens went behind my eyeballs. After a lucky opening I couldn’t see and after a blind and rough landing I finally got both contacts out. For those who haven’t jumped yet – DO IT. Remember next year when you finally decide to do it you’ll be a year older.
I can’t afford the time and money so I’m giving up on it for the foreseeable future.
Its better solo, You’ll have to do static line jumps before you can do any serious skydiving.. but its worth it and its awesome thousands of feet up with nothing but yourself. Do it.
I have tandem jumped before, and although the experience was a little bit of a let-down at first (it wasn’t as daunting as I might have thought), sometimes I find myself going through the experience in my mind trying to go to sleep.
I’d love to know what it feels like jumping solo (no doubt it’ll be more daunting than being able to rely on someone to do everything for you).
All I need now is a little spare time, some money, and a little more motivation to organise things than I have right now ;).
It’s been on my mind for a while but I’d like to shift it into high gear and get this done.
Did this with some friends up in California City years ago (about 1991 or so) and it was a blast!! We jumped static line, so you get a short free fall, but you can jump alone. Everyone should try this at least once. The chutes are so evolved now that when you land, you feel as though you are steping off a city curb. Scary and exciting all at once. Do it!
skydiving…...totally amazing….i conquered my fear of heights and achieved my goal…..i now have my solo licence and formation skydiving licence and will be spending xmas 2005 doing my freefly qualification in spain!! awesome!
