Been there, done that. I was an awesome place to work, simply because they do what they can to keep their employees happy for the most part. I mean, you can’t beat a Monopoly themed office, a pool table in the break room, wireless headsets so you can roam around the office while taking calls, the give-aways for employess… Plus much more!

I wish to work for Apple not because it has become uber cool of late (though I will not say that this isn’t part of the reason), but because their philosophy resonates within my soul. Their design philosophy places the human, and not technology, at its centre; humanised technology I like to call it. For good design is not about how something looks, but how it works. I would love to be a part of this.

    FACT:

I am a call center tech. The world calls 1-800-my-apple and I’m one of the guys that tells the world how to work or fix their computer. I will say most of the time I really enjoy dealing with Apple’s customers, but then again, some people just don’t understand that I’m doing my job and they just assume either me or Apple is responsible for something that is out of Apple’s control.

I hear the racism in people when they talk about how much India is “NO HELP.” “Thank god you speak english!” or “Let me just say how proud I am to speak with an American.”

I do not get paid commision for selling the Apple care protection plan. The Apple care plan is for the customer’s benefit, and the Apple tech guys are REQUIRED to give a lecture about extending the warranty.

I have to take people's credit card if they need a new mouse or keyboard and sometimes they don't understand what the word "COLLATERAL" means and "WILL NOT BE CHARGED WHEN DEFECTIVE PART IS RETURNED."

I hate telling people that I cannot help them because they do not have phone support for technical assistance. I hate attempting to try and sell agreement plans to people and then seeing a negative reaction. And sometimes I don’t like sitting at my desk all the time.

But then again with any job you could find something to complain about I’m sure.

The pay is ok for the most part. I think I’d rather work on the computers or teach classes on “how to use” tho, rather than deal with the world’s jerks and no extra pay for making sales for Apple.

    Ah, Apple…

There’s times when it’s just a job, and then there’s the times when you tell someone you work there, and they go “Wow, you work for Apple?!” Maybe you see the iPod ads covering the Paris Metro and downtown Singapore. Maybe you get a thrill every time you walk past an Apple Store, or find a neighbor’s got a new computer.

And there’s other times where you’ve spent the last month trying to debug the new operating system, and the free pizza for dinner doesn’t quite taste as good as it did back when you were building the last operating system. There’s times you find that not all smart people are easy to get along with, or that you’re not particularly easy to get along with when you’re sleep deprived, or don’t have time to fix the washing machine because you’ve been working weekends for the last few weeks.

And then there’s the times that it’s just a job. There’s boring meetings, fun projects, annoying busy-work, going out to lunch with your team, or being pissed off because something in the code you just wrote isn’t quite right.

Apple. It’s a fun place. It’s not perfect, and there’s times it’ll drive you crazy, but it’s not a bad place to be. (Interesting fact: the main cafeteria in Cupertino even has a wood-fired pizza oven, and makes pizzas with whatever you want on them.)

But I still quit, and I’m looking forward to stopping for a bit. That means there’s a job opening up in Cupertino…
