$500 from the women’s institute, $100 from the queen elizabeth scholarship. The QE one is renewable for the next three years, if I keep my average above 80% – which I’m tentatively optimistic I’ll be able to do. So that’s $900 – not so bad, all things considered. That’s only $2100 left to earn, and three more years in which to do it. Plus, I still have one scholarship that I sent out this go-round that I haven’t heard back from, so who knows what might happen there.
Edit: Oh – I’m at UW now, hence the revision of this goal from “earn enough scholarship money to attend U of W” to “Win enough scholarships to graduate university debt free”. I made the decision that a few thousand in debt would be worth how much more I’d enjoy it over Laurier – and I don’t regret my choice. Plus I’m still keeping my sights on the whole no-debt goal.
I did all my caculations and even with all my savings, what I can expect to earn during summers, what the parents will pay, etc… to go to Laurier without going into debt I had to win 3k in scholarships.
I won 4k.
This is great – wonderfull, actually, wonderfull almost beyond belief – but now it’s put all this pesky hope into me. If I won 4k, could I win more?
Because, you see, the University of Waterloo will probably give me about 1k in scholarships. Laurier would give me 5k. If I needed 3k to go debt-free to Laurier, I need 7k to go debt-free to Waterloo.
With that in mind, somehow I need to scrounge up another 3k before I can reasonably expect to go to Waterloo. Probably closer to 4k, actually – I think Waterloo’s tuition is higher – but I’m setting 3k as my goal. I’ve got a binder full of essay contests… I really think I can do this, if I make myself stick with it.
