The first time I did this, I was in high school. It upset me that clerks at a certain department store consistently treated me shabbily due to my age, despite the fact that I was dropping my own money there. So I wrote a letter about age discrimination. Looking back, it’s quite a silly thing to complain about, but the experience of seeing it in print was pretty neat…

Years later at a party, when talking about editorial letters, I told a few people about this. One of them had worked at another department store, and my editorial had been taped to the counter behind the cash register, to remind the clerks to treat everyone equally!

More recently, I wrote an editorial letter when a male would-be politician in my home state suggested that his female opponent would not be able to understand education policy because she was not a mother! This was bad enough, but when she responded that his allegation was illogical AND that she’d had numerous miscarriages, he continued the attack, arguing that she should have adopted a child (as he, a multimillionare, and his wife had done). So after all this, I was furious on a number of letters. Writing a letter to the editor empowered me as a woman and as a citizen.

I’ve written a letter to the editor to complain about a comic strip that was discontinued. They brought it back! (Other people wrote in too.)
