How to visit Chichén Itzá, Mexico
It made me
satisfied 
"nice to check off another Wonder of the World. Can't begin to compare to Angkor Wat though, so I was a bit underwhelmed."
How I did it: Booked spring break in Cancun which is the closest airport to Chitzen Itza. There are plenty of tour packages but we found it cheaper for 5 people to rent a car and drive there.
Lessons & tips: We paid for a guide and thought he was well worth it. We stopped for lunch on the way back in a small village and ate a huge meal for a couple dollars each. We also waited to buy souveniers in another town but I think the prices may have been just as good within the Chitzen Itza complex becasue there were so many vendors to bargain with.
