Live without a car for a year

I was surprised the other day when I logged into my 43Things account, and realized it had been 10 months since selling my car. Ten months. It feels more like two that I’ve been without a car, which I think speaks on how much I actually need a car. In fact, my friend Erin lent me her car this week while she was on the east coast, and borrowing it has only reminded me how nice it was NOT to have a car!

I don’t have to look for parking, pay for parking and fill the tank with gas. No insurance, no payments and no driving stress. Life has been even better, fuller and less stressful since my elimination of a vehicle, that I’m not only going to call the first year a success, I’ll be focusing on a second year moving forward. The only thing I might consider is a scooter, but we’ll see…

It was easier to survive without a car than I expected. I own a bike, I live in a house where other people own cars, and I joined a car share club CityCarShare.org. When I travel for work, I rent a car. I am now working on my second car-free year.
