Any sense that actors were unusual or exceptional human beings was rejected. The job of actors was now to be as like their audience, or their hoped-for audience, as possible: one man on the stage now the man on the street.

Your job is not to be interesting but to be interested. If you are interested enough by what is trying to come through you, you will forget your conventional self and respond in authentic and often suprising ways to creative force moving through you

When work is boring- which I understand to be your great fear- it is usually because it is not honest enough. There is a reason we speak of the naked truth. When a piece of work is nakedly and unapologetically itself, there is a purity, or, if you will, a nudity to it that commands out attention. It arouses our interest.

Our craft may serve us well in making something yet again out of the stocks that we have, but it is a little like making meals out of leftovers when what you need are some nice fresh ingredients.

Instead of going through my day watching what I call the “inner movie,” I am present and tuned in to what is happening around me

I think a bad relationship can be like a television habit- something that fills the hours but numbs you out a little bit.

Your art is where the drama belongs, not your life.

In my experince an artist requires a certain amount of structure- the staples of your diet- and a certain amount of adventure, the spice.

But nothing. Write. Paint. Sculpt. compose. I don’t care what medium you choose. Just stop talking about it and do it.

Talking about making art and actually making art are not the same thing
