I’ve known for a while that there’s a local rugby team in my area (which shocked the heck out of me when I first discovered it.) I just decided last week that I was going to join. I weigh all of 145 lbs, so while I love the game, I’ve definitely been afraid to play. I suppose I’ll conclude that I’m either really freaking nuts, or a really fast runner ;) Either way, my first practice went OK and it was fun to be a bit rough and such (no where near real game-level yet) I’m looking forward to playing, games start in January.
How to play rugby
How I did it: I started college in Vermont, but I have spent my entire life in California. Rugby really isn't too big out there. My first or second week into school, this girl I lived with asked if I wanted to join the team. I told her that I was completely out of shape, as anyone could tell by me being overweight. She said that it didn't matter, running will come with practice and I'll eventually get in shape if I went to practice everyday. What they needed were hard hitters. They needed big people, so I went. After my first day, I was addicted. I've only missed practice for a wedding, and twice because I was sick. This is my third year playing.
Resources: There are always local teams you can join up with. If not, you can start one up yourself. If you can't find enough people, you can always play sevens. If people don't know the sport, show them. Teach them how fun it is.

I’ve been playing for about 3 seasons. I’m not that great and obviously a prop. As far as understanding it goes, give it time. I’ve been playing for 1 1/2 years and I’m just starting to understand what my coach has been saying about penetrating the A-hole. And there’s a lot of funny lingo like that. But if you’re worried about getting hurt just bulk up, run really really fast, or hit them first. Getting tackled isn’t that bad. Rugby is as much a lifestyle/culture as it is a sport, so when you do play get ready to join a new family (of extra crazy people!)
Arrived in New York on June 29. Was looking for recreational opportunities when I felt I wanted to play rugby. Since found several clubs that accept all players regardless of their level of play or experience. Sent emails to the Recruiting Coordinators of the following clubs:
1) New York-Manhattan Rugby Football Club
2) Old Blue RFC (their Division III team in the Metropolitan NY RFU, not Division I or Super League team)
3) Rockaway Rugby Club
4) Village Lions Rugby Football Club
5) Brooklyn Barons Rugby Football Club
6) Gotham Rugby Football Club
7) NY Americans (will be contacting them soon; their website was undergoing renovation and I could not find any contact details.)
What better way to exorcise your frustrations than running into people on a field? And when it’s all over, you get to pick them up, dust them off and have a beer with them. It’s great fun!
Doesn’t hurt if you have a super hot Irish coach either.
