How to get into grad school by katiecantsay

"I am so relieved that I don't have to find a real job yet, plus I get to keep studying what I'm interested in!"

How I did it: I heard about the program I wanted to do back in October and took the GRE. Then I procrastinated until March to write my statement of purpose and fill out all the forms and get letters of recommendation. Luckily, I submitted the application 3/31, which was right before they started going through a batch of applications. Here I am, two weeks later, with an acceptance letter AND and offer for an assistantship which will cover tuition and expenses.

Lessons & tips:

  • Apply early
  • Don't be scared to apply. You'll definitely not get accepted if you don't try for it.
  • Be organized and know deadlines.

Resources: I forget which website I used, but when I went to write my statement of purpose, I Googled it and found a good site with tips to write it.

How I did it: it's difficult to say how long this goal took to achieve. i went through a long time of wanting to apply, but being too timid to put myself out there. once i got to it, the applications took about a month to get how i wanted them, and organizing letters of recommendation, transcripts and the like took a similar amount of time.     Despite my aunt insisting that I should stay in college as long as possible and go away and make something of myself….I’d really (At the moment) rather take online classes at Drexel (or Pitt) and be able to work full time, cutting down on money issues (I hope!!) and look for a real job in the area! Yes, all this can wait and I could just go away to college…but hey, at least I’ll have a job still, Lord willing, and maybe I can be in an apartment with my beloved one :)

    I recieved my official letter of admissions for a masters program in Dispute Resolution this past week.

    Not bad considering I took the GRE earlier this month and applied on a whim – so wrth it though and I’m glad I have a concrete idea of what next year is going to look like once I graduate college!

    I read through every list of programs on the Grad Schools website. Then I determined that I currently have no interest in anything other than the following. The bold programs are what I’m really fascinated with.

    So that’s helpful to at least know what I’m looking to study.

    This is not good. I’m going to have to study my butt off and re-take the test this summer. I’m just really mad that I’m going to have to re-do the writing sections. They took forever!

    Slowly but surely. Just a few more major steps in the application process that I need to buckle down and get done … then waiting on the decision from each university! I’ve applied to UT Dallas and UT Arlington. Both have pros and cons for me, but I honestly think I could be happy with a Master’s from either one. The approaches to my field in each of their criminology departments appears to be quite different, but either would benefit me.
