How to cycle 5000 miles in 2008"It was a blast even though at times it sucked."
How I did it: Broke down the miles to how many would be needed each month, warm weather months got more miles. Then broke the months down to weeks and focused on how many miles were needed that week. When I was having a strong week I'd do more miles because I knew I'd also have bad weeks, so putting miles in the bank was a plus. Lessons & tips: It is helpful if you have bike tools and some knowledge on how to make repairs (even if only minor ones) because in the middle of summer, you don't have to wait for your local bike mechanic to free up. There are many books on bike maintenance and also Park Tools offers a good course often held at local bike shops on bike repair. I took that a few years ago in the middle of February as a way to help feed my cycling need when the weather sucks. Making friends with you local bike shop also helps… they are more willing to go the extra mile to get you back on the road even when they are busy. Resources: Thanks to everyone who supported me along the way and those who joined me on the attempt. You all kept me focused and motivated. Need to also thank the Mrs. who was more then happy to have me to spend hours out on the road.

How I did it: I got on a bicycle and made my feet go around and around. No, 43T, I cannot write more about how I did it. Here are your 150 characters: !!@#$%^&*())(*&^%$#!@#$%^@#$%^&*()(*&^%^&*()(*&^%$#@!@#$%^&*())((* Read how I did it…
How I did it: After discussing this with some fellow 43 thing members we decided to pursure this goal. I broke down the 5000 miles to 12 months, making the summer months higher mileage than the winter ones of course for weather reasons. Then started accomplishing the months goal... don't focus so much on the 5000 miles just accomplish your months mileage and you do that and it all adds up. Read how I did it…

5,007!
Well today I did it! I reached my goal of cycling 5,000 miles in 2008. It was not always easy to get on a bike but with a clear plan on how many miles I needed weekly, I would focus only at achieving or passing the miles needed that week.
Now that I have a solid fitness base, I’ll work at maintaining that while increasing my overall strength.
Thanks to everyone who supported me along the way and those who joined me on the attempt. You all kept me focused and motivated.
Not to bad for a 43 year old. Pedal On!
Just wanted to get my post in here and register my time and date. I needed 28.80 miles to hit the 5000 mile mark and I accomplished that at approx 13:25 Mountain Standard Time today. I was all prepared to do this on November 30th and get this done in 11 months. The weather did not allow me to do this that day and I had to leave the next morning on a trip for work the entire following week. So today was the next day to get r done! Will post a picture or two here in a while. Total miles today was 32.35 which brings my year total as of today to 5003.55
This was a very special goal for me! I thank each of you that participated and encouraged me along the way!
Chris
Not bad mileage (344) for the month considering it was November. I am hoping to finally reach the magic 5,000 in the next 2 weeks as I have only 138 miles left to go.
It is going to feel really good when I can mark this one complete!
YTD Miles: 4,862

only got 7 miles in.
94 + 7 = 101 miles.
I broke 100! Yay me!

64 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 94
:-)
OK, it won’t be 5000, but maybe I could say…minimum of 20 miles per week, 6 more weeks left in the year, I’ll be happy if I hit at least 220 miles this year. Hopefully some of that will be in the fresh air and not on a stationary bike, but hey, I’ll take what I can get!
My rehab right now is trying to get to the gym 2-3 times per week and do 30 minutes on the bike, 20 on elliptical. Unless I’m in a rush, I also do horizontal leg press (sled), leg curls, abductor, adductor, wall squats, ball squats, straight leg raises, quad tightening exercises, seated calf raises, balance disc, and stretches (along with upper body work with the weights and going to martial arts 2-3x/week). I need to stay consistent, because having gone so long not being able to exercise I have packed on way too much poundage and I have lost my stamina for some of the exercises and drills.
At the end of this year, I’m going to add more specific goals regarding rehab and getting back into shape.
Today I passed another milestone and cracked the 4,500 mile mark for the year. YTD miles are 4,508.
I’m glad the cycling gods smiling on me and I only have 492 miles left to cover during the next 2 months.

joined a gym to keep up on the rehab. First day did about 2 miles (just a trial while the guy was showing me around), and the second time I went in I did 10 miles. (Plus I’ve been using the elliptical machine, too, after riding the bike.)
so:
52 + 2 + 10 = 64 miles to date.
I also bought a new bike helmet. My ex had my old one, and basically absconded with it for my son to use. Why we just couldn’t go in halves on a new helmet for the boy I’ll never know, but he has held my helmet captive for the last two years and gave me one of his old ones to use. Gee, thanks. So when I’m riding on the dirt fire road two weekends ago with My Man, it was fine on the way in, because the back end of that was uphill. But on the way out, we were fuh-LYING downhill. Holy SPOKES that was fun…except... my helmet kept flying back off of my head (even though the straps had been tightened). Really useful. So I forked out and got a new, well-fitting helmet in anticipation of more rides in the woods and maybe some rides in to work.
Hmmm, I think I may break 100 miles before the end of the year…

but there’s not been much cycling action.
37 + 6 PT miles + 9 fire trail miles today = 52 miles
I joined this goal, not with the idea that I would actually cycle 5,000 miles, but just to get my backside onto a bicycle and riding. To be honest, I thought at most it would be about 5 miles! So having racked up 52 miles so far is more than I expected I would do. And there are two more months before the end of the year, so…I’m happy.
Flirt thinks 43T is in a time warp!
if she’s giving up, I’m giving up.
