In order to be more effective at accomplishing my goals, I’m going to pick three to focus on at time. I will reprioritize each week.
Also, some of goals may help me accomplish others. 4 years ago
1. Catch up with consulting
2. Prepare for the conference
3. Catch up with service 4 years ago
1. learn to program (by doing my programming hw, going to hack week lectures, reading GEB, doing puzzles, and ProjEuler.
2. become ambidextrous (brushing teeth with left hand)
3. improve my concentration (so much hw, it would be so much easier if I never had to read a line twice). 4 years ago
1. Implement ZTD.
2. Get started with research again.
3. Find some way to procrastinate that doesn’t involve bright screens.
As part of implementing ZTD, I need to identify my 1-3 most important tasks for the week. Besides preparing lectures, which has to get done, I think they’re:
1. Preparing proposals for that research project
2. Finish next assignment/solutions for my classes
3. Review that article 4 years ago
1. Prepare my fall classes—gotta get ahead
2. Get going with research again
3. Walk every day for 32 days
Big tasks for the week (and I’m kinda cheating by grouping things):
1. Draft that paper
2. Get this week’s lab assignment written, and get the grading infrastructure set up
3. Prepare this week’s lectures 4 years ago
1. Prepare my fall classes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Walk every day
3. Implement ZTD4 years ago
I’m traveling this week, so the goals are…
1. Stop interrup—wait, what?
2. Walk every day
3. Stick to my time management plan.
Last week:
1. Implement ZTD: still slacking on the processing, doing better with ubiquitous capture.
2. Minimize spending this summer: I was a good girl. I got a needed pair of shoes for about the minimum amount I was expecting to pay, but I was pretty conservative with other expenses.
3. Walk every day: yep! 4 years ago
This week’s goals:
1. Implement ZTD: I’ve been slacking on both the ubiquitous capture and the processing parts.
2. Minimize spending this summer: I had a bunch of fairly necessary purchases to make, and now it’s time to tighten the belt again.
3. Walk every day
Last week’s goals were:
1. Like and appreciate people: yeah, I think so :)
2. Focus on listening: more than usual
3. Stop interrup—wait, what?: I didn’t catch myself interrupting a lot, but that doesn’t mean much :) 4 years ago
The 3 most important tasks for the week.
For the week of 7/27, those tasks would be:
1. Create and start implementing plan for submitting unpublished thesis work. I think I know where I want to send it; now I need to figure out how to get it ready.
2. Finish preparing high-level course goals and lecture outlines (a few short bullet points per lecture).
3. Send those emails for the volunteer gig. 4 years ago
I’m traveling/in meetings all week, so I’ll pick habits relating to people skills.
1. Like and appreciate people
2. Focus on listening
3. Stop interrup—wait, what?
Reviewing last week’s goals:
1. Read my RSS feeds only twice a day—I think I missed this most days, but it definitely got better by the end of the week and it’s way down overall.
2. Find a way to procrastinate that doesn’t involve bright screens—took baby steps by bringing a crossword puzzle book to work.
3. Focus on listening—not nearly enough. 4 years ago
1. Read my RSS feeds only twice a day (from the “maintain” list)
2. Find a way to procrastinate that doesn’t involve bright screens
3. Focus on listening
Reviewing last week’s goals:
1. Finish that book chapter – I got the draft out, although I’m still proofing.
2. Get back on top of things – We got a lot done around the house this weekend, and I finally updated my finances.
3. Implement ZTD – The first two habits are going well. I’m probably 90% there on each one. 4 years ago
1. Finish that book chapter
2. Get back on top of things
3. Implement ZTD4 years ago
1. Single-task. I’m finally starting to get the hang of this one, just a little bit.
2. Get my BMI below 21.5. Because it’s heading in the opposite direction.
3. Drink enough water.4 years ago
This week, I need to get that chapter written and get ready to move, as well as watching my waistline and budget. Yikes. Let’s try:
1. Minimize spending this summer
2. Get my BMI reliably below 21.53
3. Single-task 4 years ago
1. Manage stress more effectively
2. Focus on listening
3. Minimize spending this summer 4 years ago
1. Do a little thesis writing every day.
2. Get my BMI reliably below 22.
3. Manage stress more effectively. 5 years ago
1. Find a way to procrastinate that doesn’t involve bright screens.
2. Get a Ph.D. without excruciating pain.
3. Be brave. 5 years ago
1. Brush my teeth with my non-dominant hand for 2 weeks (one more week)
2. Find a way to procrastinate that doesn’t involve bright screens
3. Stay motivated and follow through on my commitments 5 years ago
...I’ve just been in survival mode. Time to get back to my goals. This week:
Spend at least 10 minutes every day cleaning, organizing or decluttering”
I did a whole bunch of laundry in the last couple of days. Now it needs to get hung up or put away. I also bought a bunch of new clothes for my daughter who is growing like a weed. I need to get rid of the smaller clothes to find room for the larger items.
Get to sleep earlier
If I don’t get enough sleep, I don’t have energy the next day to do the things I need to do. I also tend to waste the morning, if I have a morning where I don’t have to run off somewhere. I need to be ready to hit the ground running.
Not slack off in my spanish class
Last week was spring break. The week before I was too busy to do my homework, and I think maybe the week before that, too. So I need to refresh my memory and do some catch-up work. 5 years ago
1. Brush my teeth with my non-dominant hand for 2 weeks
2. Act fearless, confident, persistent, professorial
3. Spend less time on the internet 5 years ago
Last week, I did pretty well with one goal, OK with another, and badly with the third. This week:
1. Spend less time on the internet
2. Become more comfortable with the physical world – keep doing stuff around the house while my husband is away.
3. Only speak positive words about others. 5 years ago
This week, I’m going to focus on 3 ongoing goals that have been checked off:
1. Drink [enough] water
2. Shower and get dressed as soon as I get up
3. Visit my favorite websites only twice a day. 5 years ago
This week:
1. Give 43 non-trivial charitable gifts. Holdover from last week. D’oh!
2. Become a Quicksilver ninja. Consciously start using another couple of features.
3. BMI below 22. I gained a pound in the past month. I had been losing 1-2 pounds per month for a while. Not OK. 5 years ago
Let’s see… this week… Can’t really do it because my major issues aren’t on my goal list. My stay motivated and follow through on my commitments goal seems to have been already checked off (I don’t remember doing it), but that’s my major push so I’ll count it. I’ll add get my new computer set up since that’s really important to me right now. What else… Well, I’ll just lump everything else under schedule daily goals I can accomplish, since every day is going to be so busy that it will have to be broken down into smaller pieces if I am to survive. 5 years ago
This week:
1. Get a Ph.D. without excruciating pain. (but work until it’s just short of excruciating :P)
2. Give 43 non-trivial charitable gifts. Time to do the next one, and it’s one I’ve been looking forward to: actually paying for my nagware, supercheering, and donating to my favorite bloggers.
3. Get my BMI below 22. My weight’s been inching upward lately, but I think it will go back down if I’m just careful to make good decisions and remember that the laws of physics DO apply to my body (in particular: I am not immune to the gut-expanding effects of beer, enchiladas, and deep-fried deliciousness). 5 years ago
This week:
1. Do a little thesis writing every day.
2. Celebrate Jessy’s husband’s incredible progress. Hell yeah!
3. Leave everything a little better than I found it. I’m such a literal-minded nerd that the word “everything” in this goal stresses me out. I have to remember to mentally substitute “some things,” and then I have a blast doing this. 5 years ago
This week:
1. Manage stress more effectively. I need to do things that really alleviate stress, rather than panicking and zoning out.
2. Be brave. As in, brave enough to face my research!
3. Leave everything a little better than I found it. If nothing else, I think I need the mood booster this provides. 5 years ago
