How I did it: I planned for a very long time. I had intended to go over and volunteer for an amount of time and then travel around, but I couldn't really find a volunteer program that I thought fit and that I didn't think was somewhat taking advantage of me, as they're all so expensive. (If you're looking to volunteer look at wwoof.org - Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms, they usually provide food and lodging for free in exchange for work on a… Read how I did it…
How I did it: We took a trip through Nepal and India on a Geckos tour. It was a bit rough traveling around and you can expect to spend more time than you would like getting from one city to another rather than being in one city then another. However, the rough aspects of things in India is well worth the reward of experiencing the culture, people, history and cuisine... the absolute best food we've ever had traveling (did I mention the food?)! I have dreamt about India since i was 10 and became fascinated with henna…then bought henna, and got really good at it and got a job at a spa. I’ve read so many books about india, my bookshelf is probably 80% India books. I try to explain to people how much it means to me, but no one understands.
I’m so obsessed it’s bizarre.. I’ve made (never booked) about 1000 trips on expedia. When I was 15 I started saving up money so I could go as soon as I graduated but I went to London with my school and had to use it for that. I feel like I need to go there to become who I really am. I know it will change me. I’m so afraid I’ll never go.

I’m planning to go to India for a couple of months sometime in the next year. So far, I’ve bought the Lonely Planet Guide (which weighs about a ton) and am looking forward to having time to read it.

I’ve found a volunteer program that would be $900 for a month’s stay, which is a deal in contrast to the other volunteer programs, but still feels like maybe too much.
An ashram stay may be my best bet.

I’d like to get involved in a volunteer program, but I too am having the same problem as the person above, which is that the cost of these supposed non profits really takes advantage of you, especially when you consider the worth of American dollars there.
I’m working on it, though.. still researching organizations.
Yeahsurething is out of control
I wanted to go there for so long and I’m really lucky!
I’m on a three years long education and in the third year a trip to Varanasi, India is included!
