Cultivate Gratitude

I was browsing the news when I came across this story on Yahoo -

“Researchers find that regular gratitude can promote health, happiness”

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Bill Golden survived more than 20 years in the U.S. Army and another 30 in law enforcement. He fell sick with colon cancer, and at 86, he has an artificial hip and arthritis in his knees.

Golden still gives thanks, though, and researchers say that appreciative attitude can be good for you, too.

Academics have long theorized that expressions of thanks promote health and happiness and give optimism and energy to the downtrodden. Now, the study of gratitude has become a surprisingly burgeoning field, and research indicates being thankful might help people actually feel better. There’s a catch, however: You have to say thanks more than just once a year.

“If you don’t do it regularly you’re not going to get the benefits,” said Sonja Lyubomirsky, a psychology professor at the University of California, Riverside. “It’s kind of like if you went to the gym once a year. What would be the good of that?”

In recent years, researchers have tried to measure the benefits of gratitude. In a National Science Foundation-funded study, Northeastern University psychologist David DeSteno had participants complete an arduous data entry task only to have it lost by computer malfunction. Then, a lab assistant, seemingly unconnected to the study and claiming to be in a hurry for their own experiment, restores the lost work.

The participant is dismissed, and bumps into the lab assistant, who asks for help. DeSteno found those who had been helped by the assistant, and were grateful for it, were more likely to return the favour, and did so for longer than those in a group not helped.

“Gratitude leads people to act in virtuous or more selfless ways,” said DeSteno, whose research was published earlier this year in the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science. “And it builds social support, which we know is tied to both physical and psychological well being.”

Robert Emmons, a psychology professor at the University of California, Davis, said those who offer gratitude are less envious and resentful. They sleep longer, exercise more and report a drop in blood pressure, said Emmons, who wrote “Thanks! How Practicing Gratitude Can Make You Happier.”

Brenda Shoshanna, a New York psychologist, agreed.

“You can’t be depressed and grateful at the same time,” said Shoshanna, the author of “365 Ways to Give Thanks: One for Every Day of the Year.” “It makes a person physically, mentally, in every way healthier.”

As for Golden, he doesn’t pay much attention to the academics. He simply acknowledges he’s “one lucky dude,” grateful for his two children, two grandchildren, and his 89-year-old girlfriend.

When he celebrates U.S. Thanksgiving this Thursday, he and his family will gather around the table, hold hands and say thank you.

“It’s surprising what those two little words do for a person,” he said. “It’s easy to say and it does a lot of good.”

  • Going to the zoo on Tuesday! Free in Nov/Dec, but all the animals were still out to play. Fun, free date!
  • Sleeping all day on Friday, going out for lunch, and browsing a used bookstore with my love (L)>
  • Getting a few more items de-cluttered and cleared out, anxious to start the moving plans.
  • Stat holiday in the middle of the week; a wonderful day to remember all those who gave their lives for our freedom.
  • Watching movies, movies, movies! Saw UP, 9, The Invention of Lying, and District 9. $2 movie nights at the old theatre can’t be beat.
  • Getting Mum’s birthday gift/family Christmas present mailed off. Big stress relief! Also mailed a get-well card to Nan.
  • Seeing my lovely stylist Jill, found out she is having a little girl!

My day is not starting off well, so I am taking a moment to reflect on the good things that happened yesterday:

October-20-2009

  • Had my interview for a possible job; looked interesting and the pay would be quite a bit more so I am hoping something comes through!
  • Had a fantastic dinner at my apartment with my new love. Great food, wine, and conversation. We also watched ‘Run, Fat Boy, Run’ which is one of my favourite movies!
  • The apartment is all mine for a few days, and I feel blessed and calm in a quiet space.

Hopefully the rest of the day will pick up, it’s only what you make it!

- Good date with Sweetie this morning.
- Time alone to contemplate my life and where I am going.
- I did not get SICK today!
- Good conversation with my oldest/best friend. I’m going to Portland Nov. 14th!
- Practiced Wonderwall and am actually learning the prechorus and chorus. As I suspected, it’s much easier than I thought, if I just hunker down and Do It.

Lots to think about this week…

  • Had an interesting call from a job I applied to over a month and a half ago; set up an interview for Tuesday. Not opposed to the idea of a job switch, if the opportunity is right!
  • Wore a new(ish) sweater to work in an unusual colour; co-worker commented that I looked ‘drop-dead gorgeous in that red shirt!’ and had loads of other compliments throughout the day. Shallow, but made me feel good!
  • Went to a fantastic Thanksgiving potluck, had loads of fun with my pals over great food and far too much wine.
  • May have found a possible new living solution for the New Year; this was a big concern, as my moving status is currently undecided. A lot will depend on employment, but it could be win-win for everyone involved!
  • Super cute old lady on the bus today. Just made me smile.

- Nice date tonight with my new friend. Everything just seemed to flow naturally. And he didn’t judge me for bringing a list of conversation topics on a post-it note. His kisses are so sweet.
