My dream 2 years ago

My dream is to have my own theater company, with our own space. We would be excellent, of course. Here are some sites I found today:

1.) American Association of Community Theater, Index Page: http://www.aact.org/start/index.html

2.) About how and where to shop for costumes, make up: http://www.n2arts.com/ee/theatre/storypage/starting_a_theatre_company/

My next step is to find literature on this subject. Here is a start:

  • Theatre Folk: Explanations of tasks & responsibilities of actors, directors, designers, producers, publicity managers, stage managers.
  • Theatrically Speaking, by Enid Holm. Topics covered in the 340-page book include the legalities: organizing and structuring for the business of theatre; developing codes of operation for business and artistic endeavors; management by goals and objectives; and much, much more. Included in the appendix are sample By laws, Articles of Incorporations, Annual Fund Drive Campaign, etc. It’s available from the Texas Nonprofit Theatre Association.
  • Americans For the Arts. Publications, advocacy, and much more. The organization’s publications on management, volunteerism, and advocacy are especially helpful. The entire catalog is available via the links above as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, which can be viewed in your browser.
  • Center for Nonprofit Management, Supplying management, training and technology assistance to nonprofit organizations.
  • For an overview of the incorporation process, see the website of the Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits (MAP).

The second item looks really useful.

I’m interested in any information anyone in the community can share with me about the first steps toward a theatre company.
