Kell510 is thinking how much she hates broccoli
I joined a class!!! Islam studies here I come from Jan 20th – May 23rd!!! Wish me luck everyone!
How I did it: I got into this from watching Sleeper Cell, Season 1 via Netflix. I learned more from that show and then I researched it online. I read newspaper articles, interviews, websites written by Muslims, and watched a documentary on TV about Islam.
Lessons & tips: Be open-minded (although you probably already are if you have this as a goal). Be patient, it takes time to truly get a sense of Islam if you are brand new to it. Take your time, you don't have to rush through it, which makes it easier to soak up. Appreciate what you learn, share with others.

I grew up in a Christian household, as many white Americans have. But the reality of the situation is that the Muslim faith seems more real to me. I don’t really know how to describe it and I feel very conflicted over what I have always been told is true and by what I actually believe is true. I honestly don’t think that people should believe whatever they were told was true growing up. You should search for the truth yourself. Pretty much I’m just struggling with the situation. I would love to talk to someone who may have gone through a similar sort of situation.

I started a blog which speaks about different areas of life according to Islam. I use only the Qur’an and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and may also have quotes of those from the past. I just started it not too long ago so, bear with me :) I know that there are tons of well designed and planned sites but i just figure that if only one person read and benefitted from it, alhamdulillah…. http://goodspeaks.blogspot.com
I want to learn about Islam. Being that I am Muslima, its good to know about your own religion not just what you’ve done your whole life.
Salaams
this site has so much to offer about Prophet Muhammad, who is they figure to understanding Islam..
I have benefited a lot and I believe you all will agree.
Let me know what you think..

we have a lot of active groups of muslims in our coverage zone, as well as a pretty amazing private islamic school. by covering this school, the local mosque and these groups, i have learned so much about the religion, and i’m really thankful for that.
i just came back from nearly an hour of interviewing several students, parents and teachers about the school’s participation in the pennies for peace program and…. god, their willingness to give to others and bridge the gap of misinformation that leads to hate is so touching and so invigorating that i really had to blink back tears several times while i was frantically trying to capture their passion in 20-some pages of notes.
and one of the girls i interviewed is an aspiring journalist who has been trying to write a piece for local papers about her experiences with this program and the importance of categorising people not by race and religion but by simply being human. i gave her our number and told her to call the ME, so i’m really hoping this works out (our news editor seemed to think that this idea is a good one, so i’m THRILLED). i’ll be so happy if i could help such an enthusiastic student get her message out to a broader base.
and i’ve totally veered off-topic. the point is, i’ve had a great opportunity to learn about islam and spend a lot of time talking to muslims who have been so eager to answer all of my questions and help me understand what really seems like a beautiful religion. i feel so lucky to have been able to participate in things like a breaking of the fast, talk to muslim leaders within the community and see all the positive, peaceful elements of the religion manifest themselves through some truly wonderful people.
I’ve suscribed to the magazine, Al Jumuah- they’ve done a really great job with it, i highly recommend joining up for the following reasons:
1)Its good for ppl who don’t like reading books- for myself,i dont have al ot of time to read so i find squeezing in a few pages a day makes it hard to understand the book’s overall meaning, so i never end up finishing it. while Al jumah magazines has a variety of short articles on various topics- making it much more intereresting and easy to read
2)from an islamic perspective, i wouldn’t say its approach is ‘extreme’, nor is it ‘mickey mouse’- its somewhere in between, probably veering on the conservative side
3)most of the articles (with the exception of translated versions of great works) are written in an engaging yet informative manner
4)there are articles for the entire family with the following section in each issue: woman’s issues, a message to the youth, parenting tips, activities (eg islamic cross words) for the children, and general articles intended for a mature audience
