This shouldn’t really be that hard. I only live about 30 minutes ride from work AND I work for a cycling magazine!
My excuse is that my current bike’s 14 years old and all rusty.
How I did it: practicing on weekends - after a few weeks I went for it. Great experience and I kept it up for three years. Read a lot about how the pro's rode and applied it to my technique

I need to get a bike. I’ve been riding a stationary bike at the gym, but am looking for a bike to ride around the neighborhood and, eventually, to work. Right now, I only live about five miles from work, so the task of riding a bike there isn’t too daunting and if it is too hot in the afternoon to ride home again, the city buses have bike racks on front.
The ride put me in a great headspace before my long haul in front of a computer for 8 hrs at work.
The ride home was gorgeous in the evening. It was absolutely faulous! Will do again and again!

I loved it, especially the early summer mornings.
