I'm finally in a degree program! 2 months ago

It took me a while to figure out where to go to library school. I got accepted to University of Denver, but when I found out they had no financial aid to offer, I knew it wasn’t worth the private-school price tag. Luckily, I found that the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has a completely online MLIS program that doesn’t charge high out-of-state tuition for it’s distance ed students. Even better, it has an Archives and Records Management concentration, which is what I’m going for.

I’m in my second semester, which is going better than the first (it was a rough adjustment getting back into school!). I think the degree program is going to take me 3 years total, because I want to work full-time and I can’t handle a ton of coursework with a full schedule.

I’m glad I found this career path because it’s perfect for me.

Grad school was a little bit lame, but I get to be a librarian now, so it’s alright in my book.

I always loved libraries, books, finding information. However, when it came time to get my undergrad degree, I went into OT…worked in the profession for several years and wasn’t to happy. I thought about going back at the time, but then had kids, quit working, and then started working at home selling books online…but I still have this in the back of my mind. I think I need to look at requirements at the UW, which is where I would go, perhaps get in some work in a library for refs first before applying, and then also consult with my significant other, who is not convinced of the cost (expensive) vs. benefits of this goal.

I have worked at a library for eight years and am currently pursuing my MLIS! I’m really excited because I know that this is what I want to do, but it also is a lot of work.

The long road ahead... 14 months ago

I know I want to get an MLS/MLIS, but I’m still only in community college, taking a class or two a semester while working full time (at a library, of course!). It feels like it’s going to take forever, but as long as I get my MLS someday I’ll be happy. :)

8 hours done, 6 hours in progress! 15 months ago

Well I ended up taking 8 hours over the summer since I wasn’t working. It was so much fun and I’m glad I did it! I got two of my core classes done and one elective. This semester I’m taking Literature for Youth and Information Resources Development. I LOVE my classes so far and I’m so excited to be getting closer to being a librarian! Woot!

Yes! 17 months ago

So i’ve decided I want to get my masters in library science. I either want to teach in a k-12 school setting or specialize to work at a law library. I am so excited!

I’m thinking of applying to get a master’s degree in library science online. Can someone tell me what exactly does this entail? What kind of homework and writing do you have to do? You hear more about how it’s challenging and stuff but what really do you have to do? Are there questions to answer after you read or are there a lot of papers to write? Anything would be a lot of help! Thanks everyone.
