I love Ayn Rand, and have re-read this book a few times. To me, it is like a rough draft of Atlas Shrugged.
is the same as the finish another ayn rand book goal..but i think for that goal i’m going to read atlas shrugged. right now i’m on page 444 of the fountainhead. i have to work by myself for 7 hours tonight, so i figured i’ll take it with me to occupy my time (my job involves sitting in an arcade, giving change and cashing in tickets..don’t worry, i won’t be slacking). i really hope i can get it done soon.
Finished!
And I loved (almost) every page of it.
I re-read the last few chapters (from the part where Roark blows up the Cortlandt project) because it was amazing.
So I looked for it for 3 weeks in who knows how many used bookstores, and couldn’t find it.
The other day I walked into this other place I had never been before and found 5 copies.
So, I finally have my book!
I’ve just started that part of the book.
I love it. I was awake until 3am yesterday reading “Gail Wynand” and I didn’t even realise how late it was.
I admit, in the beginning I really didn’t like it and I thought the 700-or so pages would be tedious and boring, but now it’s amazing. I was bored out of my mind in my creative writing class and found myself flipping back and forth between fantasies about what would happen in the book, and about poking Edward Toohey in the eye with a fork.
Almost at the end of Part 2 – Edward Toohey.
I love it. For whatever reason, I identify most with Dominique Francon. I cannot explain why, it’s just one of those weird things. Her actions make sense. When Rand describes Dominique and her life and what not, I see similarities and feel like I’m not alone in the way that I act and am. I know it’s totally strange to idenify with that particular character but…..argh. I can’t explain this for the life of me, but it’s made me read the book faster.
Sadly, I have to return it to the library. It’s due on friday and I can’t renew it since it’s on hold for someone else. I’m hoping that I can find it and some used bookstore or something. If not I know that I’ll never get around to finishing it which makes me really dissapointed in myself. I really like this book, and I didn’t think I would.
Wish me luck in finding the damn thing somewhere.
I said that it was worth it to finish The Fountainhead, only because I find almost all books to be worth reading. Certainly it is “worth” reading any Ayn Rand book, if only because she was such an influential author.
But, man, a lot of The Fountainhead was tedious! I much prefered Atlas Shrugged. The Fountainhead made its point early on, then made it again, and again, and again, and again. It is one of the few books that I think made a better movie than a book.
I found out about an essay contest for it, and I’m already about 150 pages through.
I really like it so far.
