ryan19554 Trying to squeze the best out of life
Ive always hated to see the poor and suffering. I want to help them by going to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen at least three times this summer
How I did it: I am a certified financial counselor. So, I volunteered to teach a money management class at a local homeless shelter for women. We are doing a 6 week series. I have already given 3 weeks of classes. This class gives these women tools they can use to get on their feet again and manage their money correctly.
Lessons & tips: What skills do you have? Take those skills, and see how that can help someone in need. Then, volunteer those skills at a local shelter. Also, decide what type of group you want to help. Women with children, single women, men?
Resources: Search google for local shelters in your area and visit/call the staff there to see if they can use your help/expertise in aiding the people there.

I have never volunteered at a shelter. I am a stay at home wife and mother and have plenty of time to help out
I am not looking to service hours for a specific event or for school, i already have over 700 since this summer. I just want to find some opportunities to help out in my community.
i need service hours for school…is there a homeless shelter or soup kitchen in middletown or monroe ohio that i could volunteer at?? i need to know now!!
thanks mackenzie
I have always wanted to volunteer my time and services in a shelter. I think this will help me grow to be a better individual and foster in me a feeling that I am making a difference by giving back to the community that has given me so much.
I have always been interested in helping those that are less fortunate. I believe that the homeless definitely qualify. Not only do they have nowhere to live, but more often than not they also suffer from other serious issues, joblessness, mental illness, substance abuse, etc.
I hope to volunteer very soon, and to one day become an integral part of a non-profit organization dedicated to helping both the homeless and mentally ill.

Ive never volunteered except at home (sometimes to do the dishes or something) because everywhere says im too young. I swear last year the volunteering agewwas 12 now its 13…)
I spent my first Christmas this past December away from my family. Instead of feeling bad about being alone, I volunteered at a senior center packaging holiday gifts and prepping for their holiday party! It was great.
I now serve dinner twice a month at the Bowery Mission in New York City. Being able to give selflessly is important.
I’m rostered on at a homeless shelter in the city to volunteer overnight twice a month. I’ve only volunteered once so far, it was quite an experience.
There was a slight issue when the other volunteer didn’t show up, I didn’t sleep very well because I had a horrible nightmare that I was being strangled, there was no heating at all and a strong smell of ciggarette smoke and in the morning some of the homeless people got quite cranky with me for not waking them up sooner.
But I liked just sitting and talking to people in the evening. There seems to be such a vast mix of people who experience homelessness. I think before I started doing this, I had the preconception that most homeless people are unwashed older men with beards!! But I guess I’m starting to see that this can happen to anyone young or old for so many reasons, and that in many ways these are people that are just like me.
Anyway, I’m going back next week.
