I have seen my relationship with God as an evolving journey of spiritual growth over the years. Lots of lessons learned along the way, lots of highs and lows. But I’m so very glad that during times of despair, I am not alone.
One thing that I would like to comment on, is that over the years, I’ve experienced many situations of people having issues with religion or more specifically with “going to church.” Once some people find out that I go to church regularly, I am amazed at some of their notions about church. They must have had some pretty terrible negative experiences in their lives. It’s unfortunate. Even my own sister has made assumptions and comments about that issue. Please humour me as I go through these points:
1. People who go to church regularly are not better or more “holy” than anyone else in the world.
2. For the most part, people who go to church do not think that they are better or more “holy” than anyone else, lol.
3. For the most part, people who go to church don’t look down on other people. They are in fact, normal, average people themselves.
4. People who go to church to worship are not being hypocrites, we are human and we mess things up just like anyone else. ;)
Just because we might go to church regularly to worship, doesn’t mean that we are implying that we are morally superior. That notion is absolute garbage. We are not morally superior, read #1 above, lol.
5. People who go to church do so because we want to receive moral guidance and atone for our sins (yes, even for non-Catholics, lol). We are not going to church because we think we are in the right-hand of God (i.e. read #4 above).
I hope that I have properly explained my feelings on this. Just because I go to church doesn’t mean that I feel that I am morally better than others. In fact, maybe I even make more moral errors than average, who knows? I try to be ethical and I try to follow God’s moral lessons. Sometimes I am successful in achieving that and sometimes I fail.
I have even mentioned on 43T previously that one of the main reasons I go to church is to use music to help get closer to God. I readily admit that I need music to form a closer connection and remind myself how I should be leading my life. Sometimes I get it and sometimes, I need to go back for remedial work. ;)
Have a wonderful Sunday, fellow 43 Thingers! :)
