Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day. There is so much information about these customs that date back many many years. There’s a wiki entry for it, and others have websites devoted to Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday, depending on what you want to call it (guess it depends on where you live).
I never knew it was to eat up all the fats, butters, oils and bad things before one fasted for lent. I actually never knew one fasted for lent. I knew you gave up things for lent but I never knew it had so many traditions, tying pancake day up with it. It’s fascinating.
Football matches are played in England, Mardi Gras are held in France, a fundraiser for a church is held in Australia, and here I was thinking we just ate pancakes! I never knew why. Never questioned it. Until now.
From Estonia to the Philippines there is a tradition based on pancake day, therefore when I have my pancake on the 5th, perhaps with honey, or perhaps with lemon and sugar… I will think about all these people around the world and wonder what they will be doing.
