I’ve been having a hard time getting my walking frequency back up to 5-6 days a week. Instead it’s been about 3 days a week. The longer walks mean I have to make time for those in the evening. I’m no longer willing to trade walks for sleep (as in walking hallways after 10pm) so the challenge is to get home earlier. And that means managing my day better. Once I can get back to 5+ days a week I will start counting my days again with the goal of getting to day 90. 4 years ago

Well I didn’t do so well this week. I only got in 2 or 3 short walks. I had a sore muscle bothering me plus my bad habits (staying late at the office and staying up too late) have gotten in the way.
I’m going for a walk this evening and I think I will set my count back to day 70 and go from there. 4 years ago
Yesterday I took my new watch with the timer on a walk downtown. I usually use my timer for longer walks that I do in my neighborhood at home. Downtown I walk a couple set routes that I’ve previously clocked at 15 or 20 minutes.
I set out on the 20 minute walk and set the timer. I did the whole walk and returned to my building and checked the watch. Hey that didn’t take 20 minutes, I did that in 14 minutes!! Well that means two things:
- I’m walking faster (well duh, Carm, you’ve been doing this a few months now, you SHOULD be faster); and
- I need to add some more blocks to my downtown routes (dang!) 4 years ago
- Day 74: June 18 – neighborhood walk to college and back + hill work
- Day 75: June 19 – shorter neighborhood walk + hill work
- Day 76: June 20 – neighborhood walk to college and back
- Day 77: June 22 – neighborhood walk around college and back – felt really good after
Earlier in the week I was “eating hills for breakfast” as Bee would say. But then I think one of the hills had me for breakfast. A few days ago I noticed a red spot on the back of my calf below the large muscle. It’s apparently a muscle that I don’t normally notice, but it was a little red, swollen and tender. I think I overdid it on one of the hills and my body is actually building out that muscle. It’s like a new muscle is there where there wasn’t one before. And it’s not on the left leg, just the right.
When I first noticed it I was a little freaked out and I felt a bit like the Hulk. New muscles popping up out of nowhere? Yikes, where will the next one be?? My big calf muscle is already big and hard as a rock so it makes sense to me that new muscle might have to grow elsewhere on the leg. It just surprised me.
I’ve been staying off the hills for a few days while the soreness goes down and should be back to them in a couple days. But this time with a bigger set of muscles to help me climb. 4 years ago

- Day 70: June 12 – neighborhood walk + core exercises + hill work
- Day 71: June 13 – downtown lunch hour walk + hill work
- Day 72: June 14 – neighborhood walk to college and back
- Day 73: June 15 – neighborhood walk around college and back – weather was perfect for my long walk – 65 degrees, sunny and a nice breeze
This week my walking program has me starting to do some core strengthening exercises a couple times a week. I managed to do it once so far but maybe can do them again tomorrow. A couple of the exercises are pretty hard for me because of my extra weight – I’m talking about the ones that use your body’s weight as resistance. Oh well, I’ll keep trying them at the very beginning level until it’s not as hard then progress from there. 4 years ago
I lost an entry! Hmmm…to reconstruct,...okay …it’s coming back…

- Day 64: June 3 – downtown walk to group birthday lunch and back – steep hills involved
- Day 65: June 4 – neighborhood walk to college and back
- Day 66: June 6 – neighborhood walk to college and back
- Day 67: June 7 – apartment hallway walk
- Day 68: June 8 – long neighborhood walk past college and back
Well I’m on my way to Day 90. The Day 64 walk above is part of why I do this and I was reminded that I still have a long ways to go. When I go out to lunch with my friends I don’t like that I have a hard time keeping up with everyone else, especially on hills and stairs. My coworker friends are all long legged and thin types who barely break a sweat climbing a steep hill or staircase. I on the other hand have a lot of trouble.
I suppose I’m in somewhat better shape for all the walking I’ve been doing, but I’m a long ways from where I would like to be. I should do more hill work on my lunch hours. 4 years ago
a short walk with my youngest son down the road. He wanted to see the site of the fatal traffic accident again and check if the candles and flowers were still there. Floers are but candles are out. 4 years ago
another intense day of cleaning and sorting clutter… lots of walking around the yard 4 years ago
day 23 & day 24… pretty intense walking around the yard to get rid of all the recycling… lots of back and forth and carrying junk… totally worn out 4 years ago
day 21 walking around the yard, got rid of more recycling
day 22 besides the walking around the yard, I also walked with my youngest son down to the bus stop and back 4 years ago
my youngest son and I walked down the road to drop off a letter that came in my mailbox but was meant for a neighbor. Not only did we find the neighbor, who we hadn’t met before, but we also found 4 candles burning in the ditch. Now we know where the fatal traffic accident occurred in March. Interesting. 4 years ago
- Day 58: May 26 – 4 hours of on-my-feet shopping at an outlet mall
- Day 59: May 27 – short neighborhood walk
- Day 60: May 28 – walking tour of Fremont (2 hours 40 minutes – dogs were barkin’ after this!)
- Day 61: May 30 – apartment hallway track
- Day 62: May 31 – neighborhood walk to the college and back
- Day 63: June 1 – neighborhood walk past the college and back
Coincidentally I made it to Day 60 on my birthday and the day we did our big Fremont walking tour. I think I was a little ambitious about the distance especially since my feet have been giving me a little grief lately. But I made it and now I’m ready for the next 30 days.
My reward for getting to Day 60 was a digital watch with all kinds of fancy features but especially including a countdown timer. I was sick of carrying the kitchen timer with me everywhere. Ha!
Thanks by the way to everyone on here who has been SO supportive and encouraging on this goal. It really has helped to keep me going. 4 years ago

Sun- Day 15 To the hardware store again! 4 years ago
Day 12 neighborhood walk
Day 13 work walk
Missed yesterday due to making up for major sleep deprivation. I had about 6 hours of sleep in 48 hours (Wed.-Thurs). Within the 24 hours of yesterday to today, I slept 19 hours. I want to get back on track! 5 years ago

day 18. Besides the walking around my yard, I also went for a short walk with my youngest son to pick wild rhubarb leaves in the forest 5 years ago

day 16… more walking as I cleared clutter… I was pretty worn out, but still managed a short walk afterward with my youngest son just down the road to see the horses. We were delighted to see the cows were back in their pasture now. 5 years ago
Sunday missed – Storming out!
Day 10 – work walk
Day 11 – Chilly evening neighborhood walk. Considered whimping out and I’m so glad I didn’t! 5 years ago
not an easy day for walking… cold and wet outside, so I resorted to walking in IKEA and a little bit in our yard, back and forth. 5 years ago
- Day 53: May 20 – short neighborhood walk
- Day 54: May 22 – walked to volunteer gig in Belltown (in running shoes this time)
- Day 55: May 23 – apartment hallway track
- Day 56: May 24 – neighborhood walk to the college and back
- Day 57: May 25 – long neighborhood walk past the college
The feet are holding up just fine in my running shoes. It’s hard to find time for the longer walks so they end up getting stacked at the end of the week and I do them “just in time” to make my goals. I would like to do better at having a better mix of the longer and shorter walks. 5 years ago
about 40 minutes walk at Bjevröd with my youngest son… such a beautiful place! 5 years ago
Day 8 Instead of driving to and from the hardware store, I walked!

Day #7 The walk was fairly brisk, also. I’m really looking forward to more walks! 5 years ago
