How I did it: I didn't actually make my own box. After researching some, I found that it's way too expensive to make your own as the pieces are pretty rare.
I did get one of those mechanical music box mechanisms where you compose your own melody on the strip of paper. It's a really cool little instrument, and making the melodies is fairly complicated, but totally worth it. It sounds so good.

I’m pretty proud of my prototype… whoa nelly!
I set’er up today and found the few points that need attention on the road to a really cool finished product. :) I am very much looking forward to gettin’ er done in the next few days, i’m sure it won’t be long now.
I’ve abandoned the filigree for the time being as i feel that perhaps i’m better using my time at school with the equipement we have, to get the mechanics worked out. :)
Fingers crossed wheels spinning!

I want to start cutting out the filigree for the first music box tomorow. I’m very excited about it.
i think it will be beautiful and interesting and a fabulous kind of piece that i can enter into a call for jewellery/craft in future.

Something that i’ve been toying with since i moved out here, is the making of music boxes.
I found myself with a concept worth exploring recently, and am about to start making to-do lists again because not having confined dates is something that is really buggering up my life at the moment.. so yeah, once that starts to mke sense again, i’m going to set a date to have the proto and then the original finished one/s done.
Should be very cool, kinetic, simple, and aural.
Can’t wait for this to drop!

think i got some stuff by the busses and in the ballet audience that might work out to be useful. It takes a while to get back into the feel of things again. yay sound.
i wonder if i can catch the salmon run on audio… also, torn about talking/not talking on the tapes.

I did Mischa Gloubermans ‘Terrible Noise’ last year around this time, and i’m thinking lately how good that was not only for me, but for a lot of that gangs understanding of sound and jazz.
We were jazz.
I would like to figure out how to run a workshop in the same vein at or around christmastime with people at school so as to prepare myself for possibly running a lecture or performance type work somewhere in the area in the spring/winter.
Mayhaps i should organize a group noise for my appearance in Toronto. Like imploded carolers. :)
I also read an article about the newly birthed ‘complaint choir’ in Vancouver’s ‘Georgia Straight’ while i was up in canada… i’m interested in the possibilities that that would provide for performing.
I miss sound.
I am also looking at volunteering for the S.Symphony orchestra and attending some of the soundart performances put on by non-sequitur here in seattle.
I like leadership but i’m a bit rusty so practicing with friends will be a nice less-nervewracking begining.

I’m a little stunned sometimes when it comes to math on the board and i need to work on being open to the equation.
I need to work on being open minded and letting the math wash over me with optimism.
I want to be able to figure out why using more than one trumpet valve somehow doesn’t mathmatically work to calibrate the appropriate sound automatically…
huh.
Gonna figure it out
for sure.

i want to do a toronto soundwalk, and record the sound of a passing streetcar before i leave toronto.
Its sort of like living by the railroad but quieter and humbler, and a strange sort of beautiful comforting sound.

for the internet in my building to be down for me to finally sit down for three hours last night and LEARN about my zoom audio recorder.
Its so FAB!
I recorded myself in all 4(!!!!) formats, learned to transfer them to my computer and even to make them into mp3 and normalized files.
SO COOL!
Now i just need to get into the habit of turnng the thing on, and keep it from changing my mood when i’m singing my kitchen dishwashing aria’s. That’s really the whole reason i got the thing. I am convinced that there are some good songs in there… sometimes they just happen and i surprise myself, but it doesn’t do to write them down (check out the whiteboard marker scrawlin’s all over my fridge!) and i usually just am so in ‘the zone’ that i keep going and forget what was so great after a few plates or cups.

Also.
I woke up singing:
“Sometimes you think your a party! But maybe, you’re just a fancy candle…”
Wait i’ll put that in context:
After having a dream where i was being introduced to my VERY HANDSOME shrinkologist boyfreind,’s father at dinner and the boyfriend was telling stories of me being an embarassing fool (who knew!!!!). Then a whole bunch of people came out from under the table cloth and there was an elephant next to the waiter and someone parted its butt cheeks and uttered something to do with :’spreading the labs’.
hmm… that’s what happens when I convince myself to sleep in on a sunday!!!
Or maybe it was the ‘rob roy’ before bed. :)
