How to pet a sting ray by ryein

"It's fun and gross at the same time!"

How I did it: There are many places you can pet sting rays and other animals. I did this several times as a child at aquariums. Most recently, I visited SeaWorld Orlando and was able to pet and feed sting rays again.

Sting rays look leathery, but in the water feel soft and generally not very slimy. In the SeaWorld Orlando tank, most of them swim around in a big circle. You can buy food and hold it in a specific way, and they will come eat it out of your hands. You can simulate holding the food and they will suck on your hand to try to pick up some food. I don't recommend doing this (especially with little kids) as it's a very ... odd feeling.

Lessons & tips:

  • Be gentle with the creatures. You don't want to hurt them and don't want to make them mad. Not that they'll jump out of the tank and attack you, but it's just mean.
  • Buy the food if available and your group is mature enough to not be frightened by it, as it is a unique experience. 

Resources: I was able to pet stingrays and other sealife, including dolphins, at SeaWorld. Many aquariums I've visited have petting tanks (without the dolphins). Check the aqariums and zoos in your area to see what kind of petting/touch pool experiences they have.

I've never looked into petting creatures in the wild and this "How I Did It" does not include information on that type of an experience.

    They are so soft and extremely velvety. I got to swim with them at Discovery Cove in Florida. They’re really, really cute too, and pretty affectionate: I call them “the cats of the sea”. I also pet them when I was in Minnesota in 2006: They rubbed their faces on my hands!
