Goddess of TravelJoin a Local Chapter

As a current member of the global community of Amnesty International, I long to meet like-minded people who have “Justice” written on their hears. My goal is to find a local group and get involved. It’s lonely writing letters solo. 3 years ago

eclectic passionfinally done it!

i’ve been planning to do this for ages..i just kept putting it off for another day..but lately i’ve felt so infuriated and depressed at the world’s injustices i knew i had to do something, however small. and ok, it isn’t gonna magically eradicate the whole world’s problems. the world will never be a utopia. but at the same time, i think it’s very dangerous to society to hold the idea that you are completely powerless as an individual, it is for this exact reason, combined with comfortable ignorance/inaction, that there is so much injustice in the world. it’s jsut like the vote, one vote alone seems to have a negligable effect on the turnout, but if everyone in support of a certain party did that, the results would alter dramatically. ok, so what i’m basically saying is however seemingly insigificant your contribution to a cause, there is strength in numbers. ok this isn’t reqally a nice analogy, but i’m gonna use it to prove a point: if a ridiculously small political party headed by an evil genius with crazy ideologies can lead to the slaughter of 6 million jews and others, then surely the power of good can multiply equally in strength if supported by many individuals?? i’m no longer a hopeless idealist, i know it’s impossible to save the world or even a great proportion of it, but surely improving the quality of at least 1 or 2 people’s lives, by doing something as simple as joining a cause which is close to your heart and taking some small simple actions, is worth doing..is it not?? the power is in your hands! :) of course, there is also the ripple effect, where your actions may influence someone else to contribute to the power of good..for instance perhaps this will inspire a few people with this goal to decide to finally take the plunge, as i have been inspired by certain people i know and others i don’t, e.g angelina jolie and her humanitarian work. the important thing is that you join and help a cause of your freewill, so no-one should be co-erced or guilt-tripped into joining (other than by their own conscience, depending on which cause is closest to their heart) and that we all have a choice to support and prioritise individually whichever charities/causes we consider to be of most pressing concern to humanity 3 years ago

shannowlIt's been too long...

... that this things has been on my list.
I went over to the website just a second ago, and joined by monthly direct debit. It’s so easy to do, it made me wonder why I had this on my 43things so long. I’m looking forward to my welcome pack! 4 years ago

LaKariSoon

I already joined a german group called Com-mit to Partnership e.V. which works with NGOs in different countries and was founded by students.
Last summer they went to Guatemala to work there for about 6 weeks with a local organisation and I hope to be on the next team for the next trip.

In addition I’m going to join a local Amnesty group in my city in September… I’m excited and very curious about their work and projects and I’m really happy I’ll be able to help! (Even if it’d just be handing out flyer to the people :)) 4 years ago

MarkOkay, a first step...

I have to admit first and foremost, I have one problem with Amnesty International, and that is the death penalty. I am a huge supporter of the death penalty, and so far as I understand Amnesty International is vehemently opposed to this. I understand that the use of the death penalty in most oppressive nations is obviously prone to be used entirely unjustifiably and it is also obviously non-reversible, but still, theoretically I support it.
So for this reason I haven’t yet joined Amnesty. Otherwise I think it is the best organization on earth and human rights and justice are the most important issues that can ever be discussed, followed closely by the environment. So that said, I bought the Instant Karma : The Campaign to Save Darfur album (this is a link to iTunes). A start… We will see if I can let go of my death penalty issue long enough to join such a worthy cause. 4 years ago

fire_fliesAmnnesty International

Well, I got my act together and joined online. It was easy I am glad I feel connected to the world and have a chance to do something to make a difference. 5 years ago

I’ve been thinking about joining lately, but I’m not sure. I know they fight for human rights, but apart from that … I don’t really know what I’d have to do. 5 years ago

sharp_young_ladyI joined

both the larger organization and my school’s Amnesty International club. I put off actually joining for such a long time because I didn’t have a job to make the monthly donation (nor a credit card) and now I have both. Hence: joining.

Wonderful. 5 years ago

a couple of weeks ago i saw a pair of Amnisty members in downtown Halifax handing out info and trying to get donations. i left them my name and number and said to call me back in a week. I need to get a bank account so they can debit it monthly. Once that’s done which should be soon, I’ll have this goal completed 5 years ago

David WrightHmm...

I still want to do this; but I’m merging this Thing with others. Joining Amnesty International is all well and good; but I think a better goal for me would be “be active in Amnesty International” or “do something about human atrocities both home and abroad.” I’m still working on this one; but don’t think I’ve gone all 3rd world dictator on you when I gave up. 5 years ago

sharp_young_ladyI began

by signing up for updates on the campaign to stop violence against women. Small steps, especially since there isn’t a chapter around here (well, there is, but one I don’t have easy access to) for me to join. 5 years ago

celerityAmnesty @ School

I have been a member of our school’s chapter for a little less than two years, and I was the leader last year. It’s a great way to get involved and to think of others more than yourself, even if they live far away. 5 years ago

KrooAnd finally...

It seemed to take long enough for them to get back to me, and even then it was with an introductory booklet plus a request for more money. None of the additional information that I’d requested about individual action and local groups. Actual instructions on what to do now are a little ummm, vague. Hidden in the small print maybe? Am feeling less than joyous about the whole process. Yeah, I know, I should count my blessings and stop whining about it. Still, I’ve sent them money in order to join and I’m feeling like I didn’t get invited to the party. I’ve said that it’s “worth doing” but purely because I believe in the cause, not because their service has been particularly impressive. Hopefully things will improve. 5 years ago

Joining AI is not complicated… Work for them or take actions for them is my next step! 6 years ago

Kroogetting there...

Okay, I finally filled out the form, and it’s in an envelope ready to be posted tomorrow. As soon as I hear back, I can tick this one off. And then I guess I’ll be adding the goal “write more letters for Amnesty International…” 6 years ago

Kroooh god I'm so lazy

I’ve been meaning to do this for ages, but haven’t out of sheer procrastination. I’ve made a headstart by going to a letter-writing session at La Ruca this last Saturday, but I still haven’t quite joined. Now it’s just laziness, I guess. No excuse. Sorry, victims of torture and injustice, I just can’t be arsed. Yes, it really is that bad. 6 years ago

lostvirtueUntitled

Their magazine is highly informative and I would highly support this as an excellent charity to give money/time to. One of my goals is to get more involved with this group. 6 years ago

Right now I’m on welfare and can’t even afford simple things like a phone, insurance, or food (I eat at a soup kitchen downtown most days), but I really beleive in the work Amnesty does 6 years ago

It’s a nominal fee compared with what you’re giving people.

P.s. Today, I renewed my membership for a year. It’s cheaper if you’re young, studying or a pensioner. In Sweden, anyway. 6 years ago
