Missing Soquel girl, Viana Carelli, found in Baja; fugitive parents in custody

A reporter and adventurer who wanted to do something monumental for his 40th birthday traveled to Baja, Mexico, for the weekend and found the Soquel girl and her family that had been missing for more than two months.
On Monday, James R. Spring found 6-year-old Viana Carelli, her little sister Faith and their fugitive parents - Richard Carelli and Michelle Pinkerton - in El Rosario on the west coast of Baja, about an hour south of the town where the family had been seen in early March, relatives said.
“It’s all good news,” said Robert Doubleday, the girls’ uncle. “I know the San Francisco Police Department is very relieved and excited.”
Carelli and Pinkerton are wanted for the murder of Leonard “Milo” Hoskins, 49. They allegedly killed Hoskins, one of their roommates in Mission Terrace, in late December or early January and left his decomposing body in their van, according to police.
Viana, who lives with her grandparents, Gene and Ellen Pauly, in Soquel, was staying with her parents for a court-approved weekend visitation in late January when her parents failed to bring her back to Soquel. The Pauly’s reported her missing and authorities tried to pinpoint where the family had fled but had difficulties tracking down the family.
However, a Paramount woman reported meeting Carelli, Pinkerton and their daughters in San Quintin, Baja, a town about four hours south of the U.S.-Mexico border, on March 5. Authorities said they attempted to follow up on the sighting,

but that process took more than a month.
That’s when Spring, a San Diego man who has lived much of his life in Baja and elsewhere in Latin America, read about Viana and contacted her relatives in Soquel, family members said.
“He said the story struck him in particular because he’s got a young daughter and Viana reminded him of her,” Rob Doubleday said. “He just wanted to go do the right thing.”
Spring, who contributes to National Public Radio, was confounded that authorities talked about Baja “like it was Jupiter instead of an easy jaunt,” Rob Doubleday said.
“He said ‘This is a piece of cake. I don’t know why the police department can’t find them—just one way in and one way out,’” said Sherry Doubleday, Viana’s aunt.
After researching Spring online to make sure he was legit - the Doubledays feared he might be a friend of Carelli and Pinkerton - they gave him what little information they had and wished him well.
Spring traveled to Baja on Friday and passed out hundreds of fliers as he made his way south, the Doubledays said. In San Quintin, the place where the family had been seen, people knew of them but had no idea Carelli and Pinkerton were wanted, according to Rob Doubleday.
“He never found any policeman who knew about it,” Rob Doubleday said.
But people knew of the family - Pinkerton had been teaching dance classes for 10 pesos an hour - and Spring had little trouble finding them in Rosario on Monday, according to Rob Doubleday. They were still driving the same car they had fled San Francisco in.
“Everybody in town knew who they were, where they were,” Rob Doubleday said.
Mexican authorities took the couple into custody and plan to deport them today, at which time they will be re-arrested by U.S. officials at the border, Rob Doubleday said. Spring is traveling with the convoy and sending periodic updates to relatives in Soquel.
The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office will send an inspector to take custody of Viana.
“We just can’t wait to get her in our arms,” Sherry Doubleday said.
Relatives are working this morning to get an emergency guardianship order for Faith so she can return to Soquel with her big sister, family members said. The Doubledays said they will try to get custody of her although they have yet to meet Faith, an infant who suffers from Down syndrome and is partially deaf.
“The girls need to be together and grow up together,” Rob Doubleday said.

Search for missing Soquel girl, fugitive parents expands
A 6-year-old Soquel girl will go into the National Missing and Exploited Children’s Database this week, almost a month after her parents who are the prime suspects in a San Francisco homicide failed to return the girl to her grandparents’ home after a court-approved visitation.
But investigators don’t know where to begin the search for Viana Lee Carelli, who has been listed as a missing person since late January.
Viana and her fugitive parents Michelle Pinkerton and Richard Carelli may be in Las Vegas, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Florida or even Mexico, according to family members and police investigating the San Francisco slaying.
“They could be traveling anywhere down there,” said Raul Castellanos, an inspector with the Santa Cruz District Attorney’s Office who handles child abduction cases.
So it’s tough to tell the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children where to distribute fliers with the little girl’s photo and mug shots of Pinkerton and Carelli.
