Farming - a great analogy for studying!  — 1 month ago

If you look at studying the way farmers look at tending their land and/or animals, you will reap the rewards.

Every day they do just a little bit of work and at the end they have a field full of corn or healthy animals to sell or get produce from.

FARMING is a great analogy for the way that you should approach your studies.

    Not worth it!

I think, for me at least, that this goal was too ill-defined. I did it, but it did not get me anything. Better to focus on specific things.

    Worth doing!

I am hoping for a career in academia, and really want to keep on top of things (mainly languages, I’m currently studying four, and have another one or two in mind) so that I don’t forget everything! It would be such a waste of so much time, effort and money. But it’s hard to fit in around a full time job and living my life, so I think if I just try to manage an hour every day. Perhaps I’ll find I can build up, but either way, from today for a month (until 8 August) I am going to try to study just one hour a day.

yeah ok I haven’t done this at all. I’ve got to concentrate really hard to make this happen.

I suck at studying.  — 2 years ago

In the past I’ve been able to get by pretty well with studying minimally (in most classes), but that doesn’t seem to be working anymore. I think if I can get this one-hour-a-day thing down (one hour STRAIGHT) then I’ll do a little better.

    Not worth it!

Well, I’ve been getting closer to this goal. I will be back in a PhD program in less than a month so one way or another I’ll be doing this!

    Not worth it!

I know what sorts of things I need to be studying, no matter which PhD or Masters program I end up in, so get to work!

Where I am at...  — 3 years ago

    Not worth it!

I’m not a HS or undergraduate college student anymore so this means something different for me than it might for some younger people. I’m in my 30’s and planning on some more graduate work, and what I need to do is to learn to work with myself in studying, rather than against my basic nature. I’ve got to re-focus, and adapt to my own learning style, rather than trying to just sit still for long hours—forcing myself to work in the pattern that so many people tell us is “the right [or only] way to study.”
