Next week I’ll be going to see the implosion of the Key Bank tower in Salt Lake City, UT. As a good netizen, I went to the 43places map of Salt Lake City and tried to add the new neighborhood that demolishing the tower will create.
At that point, I noticed a few glaring discrepancies between the Google map that 43places displays, and the real Google Maps of the same location
Double-checking with Yahoo maps revealed that 43places uses some different (most likely obsolete) version of the Google maps. The copyright notice that 43places displays is from Tele Atlas, while the Google map shows Navteq data.

I found all sorts of bugs in 43things. The most famous is the rigging of main page and of the goal boxes at the bottom of every page.
Why you never see yourself on the 43things main page

I tried the “upload a photo of [this goal]” gizmo and received the “oops” page when I clicked the “yes, use this picture” button. Going back and trying again didn’t help, neither did the cancel button. Then after going back to my list of things I see the message “your image has been saved.” 7 years ago

1. Subscribe to a user
2. User deletes themselves from 43things
Expected: they no longer appear in my subscriptions
Actual: avatar is there, etc, (http://www.43things.com/people/view/Rachie), but since the user page doesn’t exist you can’t remove the user. 8 years ago

Someone other than me has uploaded a new photo to my photo gallery. The fish photo is not mine. This is, well, a little distressing.
Update 4 hours later: The mysterious fish picture is now gone. Some kind of database voodoo? 8 years ago

I don’t know if this is a bug or a feature, but it would appear that my entries don’t show up in the Zeitgeist. Is it that I don’t get to see my entries in the Zeitgeist, or that they aren’t included at all?
Update: OK, of course this entry did show up in the Zeitgeist, so maybe the Z-geist is just a bit flaky? 8 years ago

Someone commented on my entry in “Be interviewed on NPR” (which I’d marked completed). I tried to reply - twice - and both times received a “permission denied” message. My attempted comments show up as deleted comments now. 8 years ago

when I modify the city “Beijing” to “Beijing,Beijing”(which has already existed, the link is http://www.43things.com/city/view/1703 ) ,but on the webpage of “Beijing,Beijing”,I can’t see myself.
at the same time,my city link is not altered into the new one,it is also http://www.43things.com/city/view/2152 .

Not really a bug, but confusing interface things are in my opinion worse than bugs.
The interface towards the bottom of most pages, that leads off “I want to” and has a button that says to add it to your list, looks a lot like a search interface. Yeah, so it’s clearly labelled, but people don’t actually read everything they click on. I entered some stupid thing there, let’s say “suck less” and all of a sudden I have a goal that’s entitled “suck less”, without going through any confirmation interface or anything. Meanwhile, when dropping that goal to “suck less”, I’m given the 5th degree – an extra screen devoted to scaring me with how I’ll never ever get to “suck less” again, any entries I’ve ever written about “suck less” will be gone, etc. 8 years ago

Looks to me like the “doing same things” feed and the “doing together” feed are broken. There’s no data in those files. This has been apparant for some time.
Also, there used to be a feed such as this one: http://www.43things.com/rss/uber/peers?username=Carrick which has apparently been retired although none too gracefully. You could probably just send error 410 if it’s gone for good or 301 if there is a new equivalent.
Thanks. 8 years ago

When I link to 43 Things from Firefox, I get logged in OK.
When I try it with MS Outlook, the fields in the logon screen are erased and I see no error msg.

Not really a bug, but why are you limiting goal search results to just 15? Makes it really hard to find just the right existing goal. For instance, I was shopping for a suitable garden-themed goal to join by searching for garden. The results only list 15 matching goals, but I know there are more because I can tag-surf to other goals with the word “garden” in the title that don’t appear in the list of 15. Same goes for guitar. If your intent is to lower the cost of each search, fine, but provide a “more” link for the rest of the goals that match the criteria. Thanks :-) 8 years ago

I was having a look here at the top goals under the “writing” tag, and noticed that these were the top few (in order):
- Be a better blogger 220 people
- write a book 165 people
- Write more thank you notes 28 people
- write in my journal more often 17 people
- blog more often 47 people
- Get more people to read my Blog 99 people
- write a book and have it published 35 people
- Write more 65 people
- improve my writing 16 people
Are these in the wrong order (47 people, followed by 99 people, followed by 35 people), or is the ordering system more complex than just the number of people doing a particular goal? The thing which seems “fishiest” to me is that the overall list for the top goals seems also to be based on these figures, which are in the right order. 8 years ago

So I don’t know if it was worth finding emailing yet ;)
I think it was worth looking for shortcummings, one should always try to do that, now and then, so one can make things better or understand more. 8 years ago

I am unable to mark a new goal as “I’ve done this” if I already have 43 things in my list. Is this because the system adds the goal to my to-do list before marking it as completed? Maybe this isn’t even a bug… 8 years ago

create a comment on an entry.
click the “edit” link under your comment.
in the resulting editing form, the text on the button still says “Add Comment”
IMHO it should read “Edit Comment”.
I know it’s small, but Add and Edit are very different things to most users. 8 years ago

When I want to remove myself from a goal, it tells me that all my comments will be deleted. What if I want to join a similar goal? Wouldn’t it make sense to allow one to move one’s comments to another group? This would allow us to form more coherent and larger communities. For example if the people from “digitalize my photos” could move themselves to “digitize my photos” or vice versa. 8 years ago

I’ve tried several times over the last week to reorder my “things” and keep getting the message:
“Application Error [500]
43 Things may be busy doing 43 Things. Please try again later.”
seems like a bug rather than a server error, since I tried on different days and different times of the day.

This is just a test1 to see if the 43T Textilizer2 alows for the inline creation of footnotes3.

I find it a little confusing that my teammates’ entries don’t show up in the list of people doing the same things as me. Shouldn’t my teammates’ entries be included? Perhaps the two aggregated lists could be combined into one? I’m not, yet, finding much use for the teammates’ entries list as a stand-alone list. 8 years ago
