This is an amazing open source screen video capturing tool. It’s easy to use, it can spit out either an AVI or an SWF file that’s ready to embed into web pages.

How amazing is it? I just did a screen video capture of a horrific performance issue and showed it to my Development team. They were suitably horrified that every time the user selected something in a drop-down menu, some AJAX-y crud kept locking up the UI for an unholy unacceptable 3-7 seconds at a time.

An 800×700 pixel area for about 3 minutes in a 1.2M file. And my performance issues are being resolved. QA has whined about performance before. But this was the first time that Development had a compelling visual of it.

    To Do List

I’m a team lead with remote team members in offices in different cities and this tool has been a huge win for me in terms of bang for buck.

It’s free, but I made a donation personally.

It has its rough spots, but for the most part, it really works for us. The file format is XML, so we are all about exporting to HTML with XSL.

My team can work with nitty-gritty details and I can pull meaningful summaries and overviews for management in realtime.

    UltraEdit

This is an awesome text editor. It’s worth the price to me.

It has a very powerful columnar editing, Hex mode, UTF-8 format, handles Chinese text, syntax highlighting for many many file types, converting line wrap to line break and back, kickass search and replace, and lots of cool features that I use every day.
