We took the dog out camping twice this summer. It was a lot of fun, though I think she grew tired of being on leash the whole time (rules of Shenandoah National Park). She was perfectly calm laying down in the tent between me and my wife.
This is the place to go and have fun. Yes Outer banks it is best place for family and your pets. It is about 4 hours from Washington DC and you will enjoy the ride :) Check the city called Kill Devil Hills in NC
My wife and I picked out our dog in summer 2004 at a local animal shelter. She’s a bit nervous (possibly from a abusive previous owner), which always made me a bit reluctant taking her camping. Now that she’s been with us a while, and has mellowed out, I really want to take her camping with us.
I camp with my dogs all the time! I have a website that is related to just camping with dogs—check it out at http://www.campingpet.com Sign up on my mailing list and you can get monthly newsletters that have letters from camp detailing new dog friendly campsites!
We went camping several times with our dog. We tent too, so she had to sleep in that confined space with us. We made a bed for her at our feet and when it got cold, we’d put a blanket on top of her. She was a Lab so you’d think she wouldn’t get cold but the first frosty night she woke up shivering. That morning we actually put her on the air mattress and covered her with our sleeping bag while we made coffee and then she warmed up and was ready to leave the tent for breakfast.
We always kept her on a leash so she wouldn’t bother those who might be afraid of dogs and she wasn’t barky so that was helpful. It also helps if you have a dry spot for her to lie on – we used a small area rug.
