knit a hat

It took me a week and felt like a process of ‘one step forward, two steps back’ because I kept making mistakes and ripping out rows to start over again.

In the end, it was a great learning experience. I have a new hat to match my scarf and more importantly, I have a new skill! I’m already working on my second hat. :-)

Fall is nearly here and I figured that knitting classes would be starting up again. I was right! On Friday, I found a class at a funky knitting store that was literally starting up that very evening. I’m now 8 rows into a very soft, funky purple hat (with earflaps!) I learned a new method of casting on and I’m knitting ‘in the round’! Decreasing comes next.

I’m well into the decreasing stitches for the peak, just need to grab a quiet moment when Jag’s asleep to finish things off. Had a worrying moment the other night when I lost a knitting needle down the side of the couch! I had to turn the chair upside down and had one hand pushing up from underneath while the other fished from on top. Took ages but finally retrieved it :-)

I started on the new hat while we were on holidays. Rather than use the dark blue Zhivago, I picked up a lovely mixed green Zhivago Baby on one of my excursions to the Hervey Bay craft shops. It’s a lovely colour, should suit Jag to a T.

I’m using the circular needles, a little bit of a learning curve on these I think! It’s all going well though and looks a lot better than my first attempt. I’m over a third of the way into it now, just need a night or two in front of the TV to finish it off.

finally realised why I’ve been having some troubles… I made a mistake in converting needle sizes… and as such have been trying to knit a hat with totally the wrong size needles…

So once I get some the right size, this should be back on track.
I feel silly :S

yay, I have sort of time to get back to this goal.
I’ve restarted the one I began because it was WRONG and too big!

I think I have the hang of it now…

I don’t think I’ll be able to pull this off on my own, so I’ve been looking around for lessons of some kind. The knitting store up the street offers classes, and also offers lessons during specific hours. I’m going to check that out. If nothing else, maybe they can set me up in an easy pattern and guide me along.

Seeing as I had nothing better to do today, I tried giving knitting another shot. I found a lovely pattern, dug out some decent looking yarn from the stash and sat down. Not a full minute in and I remembered just how much I did not like casting on. The annoyance/boredom from that alone made me put the needles aside. Maybe I’ll try again tomorrow.

i hve been trying for a long time , well lets be honest not that hard, but i will not give up. could even make a buisnesse out of it. well why not.

Bought a ball of 2nd hand wool today, am casting on now!
