We went to the Sunset Celebration Weekend 1 month ago

An annual event held at the headquarters of Sunset Magazine. We walked around and looked at the booths, and at the long, long line to see the ‘Modern Cottage’ main attraction (we didn’t brave the line). My dad hurt his knee last weekend on the Point Lobos trip (or soon afterward, he was in pain on Monday morning), so we did this with as little walking as possible.

I took my father 1 month ago

to Point Lobos for some hiking, animal viewiew, and photo-taking. The trails are gentle, so even though we walked much farther than he normally walks in a day, he should be ok.

Edit: just turn you head 90 degrees to the right :)

We have found something to talk about... 6 months ago

he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and his first radiation treatment is today. The doctors are highly optimistic and say they could not have even detected the cancer a few years ago; the prognosis boils down to ‘at your age you will die from something else before the cancer gets you’ (I hope the doctor phrased it much better than that, but that is how it got relayed to me).

I took my dad 8 months ago

to see the Sunset Idea House down near Monterey, so we got to drive around, talk about construction, and stop at a coffee shop.

The cruise was a success 11 months ago

There were no arguments and no attempted homicides. I think all went well.

We are going on a cruise 16 months ago

to Alaska – four of us in total, my dad, brother, sister, and me. Fingers crossed.

Now or never 16 months ago

My father is a workaholic, and the only things he does outside of work were spurred on by my mom – she just passed on, so he potentially will have nothing going on outside of work. I think he wants to travel – he watches Rick Steves on TV and has bought of couple of Steves’ guidebooks – my mom was the one holding him back (she was afraid of travel), so maybe I can take him along on a trip. The thought terrifies me: he is virtually a stranger to me.
