be done with Mock Trial!

Last Wednesday we headed to a playoff match. It was a close one, but we edged out a win. This, as I said, half disappointed me because I wanted this to end. To complicate matters, I had to work the next day.

To complicate matters even more, the next morning I got sick and couldn’t even make it to work until 2:30. But the next day, I heard we lost the match, in another close game.

Well that made me smile :)

I’m now under a lot less stress now that I don’t have to worry about preparing questions, coaching witnesses, and questioning more witnesses.

We had the most ridiculous match last night.

The opposing school only had two out of six people there. Their teacher coach played as their third lawyer, and they used our people as their witnesses.

First, the teacher from the other school, Mr. Constantine, looked like he was drunk. He didn’t really act drunk though. His questions pushed the limits quite often, and the judge yelled at him several times for going outside the scope.

Then they got to questioning their witnesses. One of their lawyers asked what college the witness had graduated from, and upon getting the answer he was like “no further questions.” This totally screwed up the line of cross-examinatino, as all cross-examinatino questions must reference a direct examination question. The judge sustained all their objections concerning that rule.

But it was worth it. Mr. Constantine asked witnesses questions about the position of the sun (which was not in the affidavit). He also moved a small prop we had (a picture of one of the witnesses for the prosecution’s family) into evidence and tried to fry us on that basis.

Gah, you would have had to have been there. But it was HILARIOUS. It was as if a sitcom had been written and this was a particularly good episode.

I thought we were going to be finished after one more match, but apparently we made the playoffs. Don’t ask me how. It took my completely by surprise. Whats more, they wanted me to be an attorney (they TOLD me I was going to be a lawyer, not ASKED).

Well whatever. There’s still one more regular season match on Tuesday, and the first playoff match is on Wednesday.
