...but it’s all been in very basic HTML ! I’ve tried my hand at other jobs but nothing gives me enjoyment like creating a web site. There is a satisfaction that you get knowing that you’ve creafted something from scratch, all by yourself.
So, my new agenda means i have to learn the essentials.
Day 1: I have a book on PHP, another on XML, Zeldman’s book on web standards and finally a Dummies guide to SQL.
The plan is to learn the lot within a short time frame and then move on to getting accredited somewhere down the line.
It sounds a little vague and ‘all over the place’ at the moment, but as Confucius once said:
“Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. “

I have been working part-time as a web designer for my boyfriend’s (Dan) company since summer. At the moment I am just doing very simple websites for small businesses and doing the updates for them. I have also been maintaining Dan’s company’s websites. I feel like I’ve progressed a lot since summer and am slowly building up a portfolio.
I definately need to work on my graphic design skills and get good at installing programs such as wordpress and xmb message boards. I have done quite a few websites now so really need to put a portfolio together on my professional personal site.
I have also been blogging on my personal site but I want to start using wordpress on it and keep really up-to-date with the lastest web design trends by integrating things like my twitter and flickr accounts into it.
Later on this year or next year I want to take the CIW Master Web Designer course to teach myself everything properly and especially to learn how to do e-commerce. Now I need to make the jump from being a-girl-who-taught-herself-basic-web-design-skills-at-15 to a professional and advanced skilled web designer.

I’m currently studying through the Skills Train CIW web course. I hope to complete this within 3 years and start my own business designing web sites. My goal then is to work part time for my current employer whilst running my own business.
I’m posting this here to keep sight of this goal and to track my progress.
I’m currently on the first part of 3 modules for the first part of the course. Hopefully this will aid me in keeping my focus on my goals and ambitions in life.

I want to learn to do web design. I think I’ll start with online free courses, maybe get some books at the library, and see where it goes from there.

Going through high school I was very into making web sites. After graduating, and the years that followed, I fell out of the habit. I used to be able to write HTML, design in flash, and write some action script.
Lately I’m trying to brush up with my skills, and hopefully to the point where my skills may become marketable.

I love writing putting tags around words, linking it all to some styling and seeing my layout come to life! There is something about the organisation and rules of XHTML & CSS that appeals to organiser / control freak in me. I need to believe that I can do and that what I create is credible.

I’ve just recently become a full time web designer.
So far I can only recommend it. The only problem I have with it is when I get home, I want to carry on doing my work.
I also took one of those courses doing the CIW, MCSD, MCAD qualifications and I can say now that it’s basically a scam. You pay £xxxx money (in my case thousands) to spend a full week for each exam (I had 12-13) in a classroom whilst some guy literally reads from a book, then they give you the book (which you could probably pick up elsewhere for a small fee) and then they expect you to pay for the exam (another £100-150 for each of the 11-12 I had). I couldn’t afford to pay for the exams after I’d paid the initial fee, so had to just go back to normal life.
The time spent in the classroom is better spent learning at home, building a portfolio and networking on web designer sites.
Anyone is capable of becoming a web designer, so long as they stick to it and enjoy it.
