Buy lots of wildflower seeds and periodically throw the seeds out of my car window while driving on highways and interstates

I want to do this but I need to find a cheap place to buy seed by the pound, and then I can give seeds out to my friends. Also what is the easiest flower to start by seed on top of the ground. 12 months ago

I did this once, I had piles of morningglory seeds and through them in the woods around my house. The one thing I did not take into consideration is that they would get no sun..of course they never grew…lol. I’ll be smarted next time. 3 years ago

It sounds like fun, but Southern California freeways are just a bunch of concrete…but the government tries to include plants…like those flower paintings on the 5 freeway wall. xD

I also want to make guerilla gardens, there’s a lot of unused lots in Anaheim.

I didn’t even know it was a goal! How cool and funny! There is a great need for some wild flowers on the roads and sides of the freeway near my apartment. If I throw seeds now, there should be something growing in the spring.

I should have canned this goal a long time ago! I’m all for beautifying highways and interstates, but this is kind of a recipe for disaster. I don’t want to introduce anything bad or non-native (think kudzu), or create a feeding area for animals close to the highway. Maybe I should just make sure that I pick up trash along highways and interstates if I’m looking at rocks along highway outcrops. I think that would do more good than the initial goal. 4 years ago

This is a really fun goal but you need to take the natural existing ecosystem in to account when you start this one. It is still doable, you just need to buy flowers that are native to your location and choose where you throw them out the window wisely! 4 years ago

I had someone respond to this goal with a few very good points about the impact this might have on the plant life and wildlife, and I would rather not chance the negative repercussions that might result, so I’m not going to do this! 5 years ago

as it’s minus 18C today and it doesn’t look like throwing seeds out along the highway is going to amount to much, unless the birds get a meal out of them. I’ll have to wait until the spring to accomplish this goal. sigh5 years ago

I just love this idea, ‘Kudos’ to you-Geogal!
I live near a small town that plants wildflowers in the mediums. It is so pretty, however, they mow them down befor they have a chance to re-seed.
But, Please, do not plant clover! Deer love them, and will often get hit trying to get to them.

when I initially came up with this idea, i thought it would be great fun. I still think that it will be great fun, however, i hope i don’t introduce some crazy species into an area where it doesn’t belong (like the nincompoops who introduced kudzoo here in the south). I should probably do some research on the seeds I want to throw. I guess sunflower seeds would be pretty harmless. Of course, I’ll have to wait until next year to do this.
