Since I’ve been a hockey fan, I’ve wanted to drive a Zam. Now, my son, turning 3 in a couple of weeks absolutely loves the Zamboni. That and a firetruck are his two favorites motorized vehicles.
In need of a 2nd job and tired of filling out applications at useless dead-end jobs, I thought to myself, “Ok, its time try something you would like to do and impress your son while you’re at it. I highly doubt I’ll ever operate a fire engine, so why not give a Zamboni a shot”. As a result, on Jan 1 of this year, I began my new job at the forum (yeah, not a good day to start a new job) and within just a few short weeks, I’m now driving the Zam. Well, Olympia, so I guess I could technically still keep my goal of driving the Zam, but why be picky?
In regards to my title: I don’t know why, but there is something about the end of the night, when all hockey practices, parties, and skating sessions are over, it is extremely relaxing and satisfying to get out there, take my time cutting and lay a nice, clean sheet of ice to bed.
So my suggestion for those interested is to contact your local ice rink. See if they need any additional help and stress that you would especially enjoy learning and assisting w/ the Zam (seems that rinks always need additional qualified candidates to drive the Zam). Even if you start out at the cash register or handing out skates.. It’s what I did.

I worked in an ice rink (in a mall) for a few years during highschool, and post highschool. Pay sucked, hours sucked, the skaters sucked…. But driving the zam was kind of cool. Especially when everybody wanted to high five you for having a crappy job but still you rode the coolest vehicle around. The other thing was you thought you looked cool for the hot moms, but now I’m older, I realize they probably wern’t so impressed. We all had the “My other car is a Zamboni” license plate holder. The best hours were at 6am sessions where I had to make the ice really really clean for the skaters doing their technical drills.. Anyway, I’d be the only one in the mall, driving my zam, blasting the Journey, Public Enemy or GnR. Good times…. I sometimes wish I could still take it for a spin. PS. I have a friend that lost his job for drunk driving the zam and crashing it into the boards.

Ever since I heard that song on those commercials I’ve wanted to drive the Zamboni, at least once, or maybe even as a temporary job. I know one day I’ll get my chance!
